1st Gen T4R Picture Gallery

Here's mine

Nothing pretty to look at right now. Picked it up in Littleton CO for $900! Runs good but needs a lot of TLC! The back really isn't sagging that bad. The PO had a load in the back. So far I rippped out the old carpet and rhyno lined the whole thing from front to back. Slapped some 33's on and some 97 T4R 16" rims and painted them black. I have a lot of plans but no money!

ya i have a set of springs that will put u about an inch over stock. i dont like them. they are on my trailer and they are way to high for me.... wanting to trade for some saggy springs... if you livve somwhere near salem or newport i am headed over in a few week.... just an idea???

Not the thread jack, but can anyone point me in the direction of instructions on how to quiet the back door of a 1st gen? It literally sounds like every possible metal piece inside of the 4runner tailgate is dangling from a string and banging around when I hit the smallest possible bump.

My truck is in crazy good condition but that back door makes it sound like the world is coming to an end. :moping: :bash:

The truck already has a 3-inch body lift but the rear-end was sagging because of the old leaf springs under there, while the front-end torsion bars are cranked up too high.

Anyway, the U-bolts needed to be replaced. Setting 1-inch blocks under there was a cheaper way of getting it up a little rather than worrying about replacing the leaf springs themselves.

No one I spoke to beforehand about doing this said anything about blocks damaging anything ... "added axle wrap" is not something I've ever heard of before. I highly doubt those little 1-inch blocks under there are going to hurt anything .. but I could be wrong..

I still need to get the front torsion bars lowered but I've been told that doing so will require re-setting the front-end alignment or else I'll shred the front tires within days.

As far as trading you my old leaf springs for your trailer springs .... as long as you're up for the work involved in pulling mine and installing yours onto my truck ... then ... SURE, I'd do that. I don't have many tools myself and I only do my own tune-ups and oil/filter changes. (not a mechanic) I'm in Salem .. you're in Corvallis .. we could do this. Let me know.

I would advise:

1. Get rid of that body lift. It just raises your center of gravity and increases your ground clearance by none.

2. Even a 1-inch block lift increases axle wrap. Get an add-a-leaf instead if you're not willing to buy new springs. Why did you need new u-bolts? rust?
Here's some info on axle wrap: Roadmaster Active Suspension will eliminate axle wrap and wheel hop on your vehicle.

3. You can lower the torsion bars without an alignment. But I wouldn't do it that way for long. It will not "shred" your tires. It will just cause uneven wear if you run it for too long.

4. The guy offering you his springs is from Idaho and will apparently be in this area. I have no springs to offer you.

The body lift was already there when I bought it and I'm not paying to have it removed or trying to do it myself. It doesn't matter to me that it gives me no extra ground clearance (not a big 4-wheeler anymore) and my center of gravity is fine since I don't drive it around corners like a hot rod anyway.

The old U-bolts were worn on the threads and couldn't be tightened all the way any more -- used to be noisy as hell driving down the road.

I considered add-a-leaf originally, but decided against it because of cost.

Your leaf springs help resist the automatic tendency of your axle to twist when under acceleration. The lift block moves the axle away from the middle of the springs, increasing the amount of torque the springs have to resist. It's more of an issue with higher-powered and lower-geared trucks, but even with a stock driveline, that lift block will accelerate spring fatigue. It sounds like they're fairly tired already, so I'd guess they aren't much longer for this world. I understand being on a budget, but I would make a point to start saving up for new springs from OME, or perhaps a re-arch of the existing springs and an add-a-leaf to prevent them wearing out again. It's not just a cosmetic thing - fresh springs will ride better and be safer/more predictable, if that helps you justify the expense at all. ;)

Nice truck, and welcome to the site!

just bought an 89 as my first truck last weekend. 22re and was in fairly good shape. Needs a bit of body and paint work in a few spots but it runs pretty great so far.

god that looks just like mine when i brought it home. mine was alittle more saggy in the rear and the wheels wernt all shiny but with the running boards and the paint. i love that paint job i almost want to paint mine that grey color.

Yea, the gray is a sweet color. I have a few rust and oxidation spots to take care of but she is clean for the most part.
