1st gen torsion bar to coil over swap?

I've been wanting to ditch the Torsion bars for a while now.

What all does it take to convert to say 2000ish tacoma/4runner Coil overs?
i know its costly but the ride in the front end is so damn stiff!
has any body done this if so what did you do? parts needed? aprox cost?

It would take a lot of engineering to swap to coilovers from scratch. Check out the long travel kits from Blazeland and Total Chaos, and check out [MENTION=89531]Cartzo[/MENTION]'s build thread.

If your front end is too stiff, you could try turning down the pre load on the t bars, or adding a set of ball joint spacers.

That is a sweet setup but a bit pricey.
Definitely not street-able though.

Exactly what I thought, but damn, what a setup it would be! It's well thought out. You would still need shocks and an axle(if linking an ifs)so it only gets pricier. Maybe keep the swaybars and use some quick disconnects to keep it somewhat streetable. You can do a SAS for half probably... I still want it tho!!!

Solid axles are plagued by the exact same issues that you say pertain to IFS, and more (at least from a stock perspective).

As an owner of both types(ifs and sfa), I agree with the bottoming out part. My 85 has much more droop than my 88 however. Both are bone stock other than shocks. eace:

Interesting topic! This is what a lot of guys do on ford rangers. Because there are so few companies that make lift kits for ifs 4x4 ford rangers, people will get a drop bracket lift for the front then do a coil over conversion. It is basically some brackets that mount to the bottom control arm and to the frame. Seems like a great mod over the torsion bars..

thanks for all suggestions! i'm going to have to do some more research! i haven't touched the t-bars so there where the previous owner put them.
