1st Gen - Trailer Wiring (and Lighting)

Wisdom of fellow 4Runners,

I need to wire my 1987 to light my trailer...
Anyone with knowledge of which wires and where they are for installing a trailer wiring kit?
Is any trailer wiring kit significantly better than others?

Also, after a mishap this morning, I believe I'll be replacing the lighting on my utility trailer...
Can anyone recommend a specific kit?
I suppose I'e like to go LED if available. Lighting and mounting for license plate also needed.

Most trailer lights use a standard 2 filament bulb, which means you will need a converter. The converter has complete install instructions.
You can get trailer lighting kits at any parts store, or online if you search.

Don't know much about wiring the truck. I know the wire came from the driver's side behind the plastic in my 1st gen. For my 2000 I got a plug n' play wire from Ebay that also plugs into wires behind driver side plastic. You might search Ebay and see if it's listed for a first gen because it was very easy and required almost no thought and cost about $6.00 with shipping. I think a U-Haul trailer shop will also have them in stock.

I HAVE recently converted trailer wires to LED. I got a LED kit from Northern Tool. I also had to buy two LED side marker lights because my state requires it. Pretty easy to hook up. LED differs from regular lights in that you have to ground EACH light to the frame. I got out the grinder and ground paint where I wanted to ground. I had some small screws and washers so I drilled holes and soldered the wires to the frame and the screw and nut hold it down and make it look finished and neat. If even ONE of your lights is not grounded properly NONE of the lights on the trailer will work. There's lots of @#$%&*! threads on the 'net about that if you do a Google search.
