1st Gen v6 Engine options

I recently bought an 88 4runner with a v6. The engine has most likely a blown head gasket and was re-built 20k miles ago (but I'm not sure how well it was done). The Engine has 300k miles on it and I'm debating on if I should just do the bare minimum and replace the head gasket, rebuild the engine, or get something else (if so what kind of engine should I put in there?)

Also, what are the largest size tires I can get for the stock 15" rims? It has a 6 inch lift so the sky is the limit.

An engine with 300K on it that might have had some kind of rebuild 20K ago throws up a red flag to me. You really won't know what shape it's in untill it's torn down, then go from there.
