1st Oil Change

I have 1800 miles on my 2008 4Runner. Dealer said don't have to get oil changed until 5000 miles, but that seems to long for my first one. When did you get your first oil change?

In the first 4500 miles of my V8 2007, the dealer compted me three free oil and filter changes.

Hey, I've not put a lot of miles on the 4runner. :

The next one, I'm going to full synthetic Pennzoil Platinum and doing 'em myself.

Do it at 1800 miles/now and you'll get the metal filings out sooner.

First change for me was at 1500. Used Castrol GTX dino. Then just went by Toyota's recommended OCI by the odometer reading for every 5k. From there on using Mobile 1 full synthetic. Did this for both my trucks.

I was also told by my service manager to wait until 5000 to change to full syn. He said that acutually there is a syn blend in there now.

I was also going to go with Purolator Pure One filters. He said they are an awesome filter but that it has no antiflow back valve in those and the Toyotas do.

He's not a service man that tells you what is good for Toyota, he tells you what is good for you.

If you talk to anybody from the old school, they will tell you to change it out at 1000 miles, but if you ask the Toyota people they will tell you to change it at 5000 miles so the break in oil can do its thing. In fact, if you owned a new Acura, the Acura dealer actually refuse to change your oil before 5000 miles. I am still not sure who to believe, so I splite it down the middle and had my 1st change at 3000 miles

Been using Pure One oil filters for MANY years on four vehicles and have NEVER had any oil related problems or premature oil burning.

Pure One is an excellent oil filter.

He doesn't know what he's talking about.

I usually change the oil/filter in my vehicles at 1200-1500 miles, but this time around I may wait until 3000 miles. BTW, I also usually send an oil sample off to Blackstone Laboratories for analysis.

I have heard of some people sending it to Blackstone for analysis. There are some other labs besides Blackstone but they have been the best bang for the buck for a while now. About 20 bucks per analysis i think...

$20 is correct.

I thought Toyota does not use special "break-in oil" from the factory? Is this for particualr models or at all? I know Hondas and Acuras use a special oil for first time break-in from the factory.

first change at 5K miles second at 8K and put in Mobil 1, will run Mobil 1 from now on at 5K interval. Engine should last forever.

There was a thread here a few months ago about a Tundra owner who send his original oil to the lab to be tested and the result came back with a high content of moly which suggust that Toyota does use break in oil.

Free Oil Change by dealer at 1k. Switched to Mobil1 synthetic at 5k and every 5k thereafter, using OEM filters.

A lot of people say you don't need to do that break-in oil change on these newer engines, but it was free, so what the hell.

I think that break-in oil is only meant to last that long, and no longer. If this is true, I would definitely suggest an early change.
