hit the nail on the head with that one! My kids get my 97 explorer that is showing its age and they are more than happy with it! So am I since its still a safe car for them and it allows me to get my 04 T4R!!! this makes me think about all the POS cars I used to drive. I used to cut coffee cans and wrap muffler tape around it that would shrink as it got heated to patch up my exhaust holes all the time. Damn cops! I say let them buy what they like and can afford and make them own into it.

Clearly $$$ is not the issue here.
There is no replacement for tasting what hard work is. Give the kid everything now he will have nothing to be hungry for; in fact its what this country needs is starving children (figuratively). I was bussing tables at 14 and worked 40hr/wk at a restaurant through college. Assuming you have a good IQ and blessed with good genes with a rock solid work-ethic to make it this far in life, you should instill that in your kid. It's what this nation needs to compete with the rest of the world. ON THE OTHER HAND! If you are a result of nepotistic lineage that got fed with a silver spoon, I have no sympathy for you and no contempt for the people that judge you.
As the late Steve Job says, "stay hungry."

I'm a 19 year old college student and my parents paid for the majority of my truck (I'm currently working part time and pay them every pay check until I don't owe them anymore). I've had people tell me "must be nice" to have my parents buy me a nice truck, I always wanted a 4Runner too. And I am not spoiled at all, I am very thankful, and I work to pay them my share. Just hope your son appreciates that he's getting a nice vehicle, but to answer your initial question, get him the V8 4th gen T4R! It's a tough truck and fits in more to the younger generation than a Lexus does. Also, you can decide whether this is good or bad, but he can have a great time modding up the truck; lift, tires, rims, exhaust, etc. Which is easier and more practical on a 4Runner. And if he wants to take it off road, a 4Runner will fit in much more than a Lexus (even though both are extremely tough and capable trucks.)

If he makes all his money and wants to spend it in his child, so be it. It sure would be nice for my mom to pay for everything but I work my ass off to pay for my truck and I know I pay for it and it's mine. All mine.
Now on the question between the T4R or Lexus, either one would do. I'd let him decide.

I hate when people respond the way they do to original posts like this. Who cares if someone is buying a car for someone. Who cares how much money one has. Be happy for what you have and if someone buys their kid, friend, or family member a vehicle that's nice of them. Not everyone has the option to do that and that's not a reason to hate on them. Jealous haters... :infidel:

I was actually thinking about this very same thing after leaving the Lexus dealership the other day (I was test-driving). My wife drove my 4Runner home and I drove her Maxima. She commented that my 4Runner drives much nicer and she likes it alot. So my next thought was . . how about a 2009 GX? There's one locally for $41K. Or a 2009 V8 4Runner . . Nothing says "suburban" like having two 4Runners in the family.
Anyway one of the reasons I didn't drive home from the dealership in a Lexus was that the color combination screamed "Really old man car." I just couldn't pull the trigger on something with a white leather interior. Thus, if I were buying for a someone between 18-25, I would be highly critical of color combination. If you can find a GX470 with decent colors (stay away from gold exterior, ivory interior) jump on it. My personal opinion of course.
They may be a bit higher, but c'mon, it's a Lexus/Toyota. How much time can you reasonably expect to be there? I'm sure they treat you really well and provide a loaner car. Sure, an oil change may be $120, but I'm betting that it's worth it to the OP.

agreed. i bought my first car with my life savings at the time ($2,000), it was an 86 suzuki samurai in 1998. that said, many of my friends' parents bought them brand new cars. 14 years later, we're all doing just fine. the assumption that buying a kid a decent car will cause them to never learn the value of hard work, never appreciate the things they have, etc is just silly.
also, when did it become outrageous for a 16 y/o to drive a late model, used t4r? the kids i see around here are driving new bmw, mbz and lexus'.

09 4Runner and $10K to mod it up with suspension, wheels, racks, winch etc. Damn, I'd like that at 34...
I have seen a few modded GXs and it just doesn't look quite right (to me). A tastefully tricked out 4Runner is the business.
Though I very much would like an 08/09 GX470 to replace my 05 4Runner. Still prefer the old generation of both over the new ones, if for no other reason than a like the oversized fender flares, its clearly a truck based offroader, but smart enough for a business car park. The new GX is too smooth and prissy and the new 4Runner...
I presume he will have to look after it and maintain it out of his own pocket at some point - and the 4Runner would likely cost less to maintain and insure.

It seems no one here is in a similar predicament. If you are able to make decisions such as buying an AMG SLS, m6, Stage 2 GT-R, and already have a GX570, then what are the specific issues or differences between the two trucks that generate such indecision? Is it just a styling preference? If he plans on modding the truck, IMO, the v8 T4R is a better canvas if he is looking to make it his own. I would just ask your son and make him happy if that's the ultimate goal.

actually i think a few of us posted that we are/were contemplating the same decision. the limited & gx are so similar mechanically, that i think it's a great comparo and probably pretty common for car shoppers.
basically it comes down to do you want the extra do-dads, better quality materials etc in exchange for the higher price. resale should be taken into consideration as well, though both seem to fair pretty well in that category.

I saw one of those at the Audi dealership a couple of weeks ago. Nice looking that's for sure. I'm not sure I'd spend that kind of money on an Audi, but then again I'm not shopping for cars in that price range.
