Gents,
Took the 4Runner out this weekend and thought I would share.
When I was in Fallon, NV earlier in the month poolzer took me out in his LTD to get some lunch. Thanks to him if I haven't mentioned it before. After seeing the mountains from the perspective of inside the 4Runner I really wanted to jump on some trails here on the east coast.
Well there aren't mountains to speak of, at least not tall ones, but we were able to find some single track stuff in the George Washington & Jefferson National Forest in the Appalachians, more specifically in the Shenandoah Mts.
First stop from Virginia Beach was Luray, VA where there's a pretty badass cave system. I hadn't been there since I was a kid so thought what the heck.
That was followed up by a 30 mile trip on Skyline Drive (the northern connector to the Blue Ridge Parkway) and the on to camping.
We camped at the end of a 6 mile path. It was generally a single vehicle wide, and sometimes even then it was tight for the 4Runner. Some parts had a pretty nasty drop to one side and the first half was slow going climbs with rocks football to beachball sized. I was a bit shocked when I spun the tires in 4L trying to climb a portion (stock tires, low 20's air pressure). The second half (where my wife was able to snap pictures) was very tame and could be taken at roughly 10mph while the first half was taken at a crawl. Mind you my wife, our camping gear, and our 2 dogs were in the vehicle so speed... Not so much. 1.5 hours later and viola!
The only permanent marks I left with were some pin striping on the sides and a 3x7" scratch on the passenger's side of the front bumper.
