Hey guys so my first experience with my particular toyota experience was bad. i took the thing in and all they did was a tire rotation and kept it all day. Now yesterday i get a letter in the mail that partially read:

Dear toyota owner, our records indicate that your vehicle is due for 10,000 mile service please schedule an appt. I look and the form has me listed that they performed an oil change at 5,136 miles. Now its due for tire rotation and inspection but no mention of oil change. I can tell you for a fact that at my first service they only rotated the tires now on the phone with the service guy he told me nope no oil change due at 10,000 we already did it. Basically they won't change my oil, What a damn mess. I'm in the toyota computer system indicating they performed a service they didn't. I'm about to scrap this whole complimentary maintenance thing and change my own oil among other things and only taking the vehicle in for big repairs.

Get a new dealer!

i got my 2010 4runner 09/10. I was orginally told oil change 5000 miles but then when i scheduled a service they said it is now 10000 miles. is this true? basically they rotated the tires and checked the fluids but did not do oil yet. that was at about 3500 miles. ill probably bring it in a little early like 7500 miles. so is it true though every 10000 miles now???

Free oil changes are supposed to be at 10k and 20k, not 5k. My 4Runner was early 2010 and the manual says every 5k, but Toyota later revised that to 10k and that's all the dealer service dept's need to do for you under the plan.

I love my 4R and it has been great but Toyota's customer service has been crappy. There are 2 dealerships in my town and they both have a bad rep. When i bought my 4R i went to a dealership about 1 1/2 hrs away and they were awesome. But it doesn't make sense to spend $50+ dollars to drive out to them for an oil change, i seem to be stuck with these two horrible dealerships. I got the one to admit fault but tomorrow i have to go meet with the dealerships head Service guy see what crap comes out his mouth.

On my 5K service, all Tustin Toyota was willing to do was rotate the tires reset the dash light. They would not even rebalance the tires like Costco will do. The Service advisor said those "maint coupons" are not worth the paper they are written on. For the 5K service he put the phone on speaker and the dealer is reimbursed $20.00 USD. Asked the manager if I paid the $79.00 service special on the flyer on the wall would they do the work required per the manual. He knew what I was implying.

Called Toyota Customer Service took a report and claimed the dealer customer relations person would call back as would someone from Toyota Customer service. 3 weeks later nothing but silence.

So yes we have been lied to. I own 3 Toyota's a 07 Crew Max , 09 Rav LTD AWD, this TE Runner. So that was 100K. Lesson learned.

I went to the one on tustin and orange and the place took forever! Try Miller on euclid in anaheim. They have a great setup while you wait.

Yup i've hit the wall of silence with my service dept. I dunno if after all the bad publicity Toyota got with gas accelerators getting stuck that now they received some sort of instruction to not admit fault to things....thats my conclusion. Well i live down in the Palm Springs and ended up purchasing at Toyota of San Bernardino.....good service there. From making the deal to taking delivery it went smooth, i wasn't expecting all these problems getting it serviced tho. I'll be in Anaheim for work training next week perhaps during then i'll leave my 4R at a dealership there.

As others have said, take down all the info and call corporate. Believe me, these reports end up on desk of Toyota execs who have power to not allow the dealership to be transferred to the owner's son, etc. Dealers act like the boss but when they p!ss off the wrong Toyota Region rep, it goes up the food chain. I've seen it with my own eyes and ears. It was hilarious.

If you can, find out who the Toyota Regional Local Marketing Group rep is. Each Toyota dealer is part of a larger group that has their own Toy rep. Do some digging (find out which ad agency handles their regional work, find the nearest Toy corporate satellite office, etc.) and contact the rep. That is 100x more effective than corporate.

Here's my favorite option: Change your own oil, learn something about your vehicle and KNOW that the job is done right. (For those that might live in an
apartment, you should have at least one friend with a driveway!)

Not trying to be a butt, but the theme here seems to be the bad dealers, unsure of maintnance schedules, etc. Go by the schedule the owners manual dictates, document the service you perform and save all reciepts for materials.

My question is this, are the "free" oil changes really worth it in the long run?

Service on Friday

Anyone have any suggestions as to marking the tires and the oil filter to make sure my dealer does not rip me off? I dont have the 2 years of free service but I did buy the maintenance package for up to 100000 miles. I can check the oil on the dipstick to see if that was changed. Any suggestion would help!!!???

WFO - tire rotation and visual inspections is all that is called out on the 5k service. 10k is where the oil is changed. Go to page 54 of your warranty and maintenance manual. My wife's MINI had 3 years, 30k miles of covered maintenance. We didn't put enough miles on it to get even the 2nd oil change out of them, which was recommended at 15k mile intervals. If you want your oil changed more frequently than the manual recommends, you can't expect Toyota to pick up the tab on that.

Not in my manual or on my service coupons. 5K intervals. What would you do if they changed it to 15 or 20K?

While I was in the finance office doing paper work I was asked which option I wanted. It was explained to me that if I wanted conventional oil, changes would be done at 5K and if I wanted synthetic they would be done at 10K. I was also clearly told that Toyota recommends the synthetic and that is what it was filled with at the factory. It seems this is a change from the early buyers, I bought mine 11/02/2010. I would recommend addressing this with the Service Manager, if that doesn't get the desired results then set up a meeting with the Dealership General Manager. I would not expect them to do synthetic oil changes at 5K intervals.

I change mine at 5k by myself. The manual was updated to 10k miles pretty early in the 2010 run, IIRC.

What would you do if they moved the OCI to 15 or 20,000 miles?
My dealership recommends a 3,500 mile oil change due to our "severe" driving conditions...that is...until they had to comp them. Then suddenly it's at 10k. It's the BS that irritates me, just sayin.

First, I'm not going to pretend that I know more about the oil and how it breaks down in an engine versus the engineers that set these limits. 10k miles on a synthetic oil change is the norm these days. I do mine earlier because I feel like it is good insurance but I'm not going to expect Toyota to pay for those oil changes.

Second, Toyota was probably still finalizing the 10k intervals on 0W-20 synthetic when the 2010 T4R went on sale, which is why 5k appeared in the manual initially. The free maintenance came after the recalls and all that. The 4Runner going to 10k and offering free maintenance were not related. Coincidental. My dad's tacoma's free maintenance is 5k intervals for oil changes because it is not a 0W-20 engine.

2 years free service i thought what the heck sounds good with the economy being how it is, saving all that money not having to buy synthetic oil and cartridge but i may just have to like every car i've owned start doing my own maintenance. Toyota Execs are definitely getting a letter and a phone call if i can track down the appropriate person. I'm enjoying my 4R though and thats the bottom line...she spends lots of time out on sand dunes and rocky trails :) This whole dealership stuff i've been going through lately is just ridiculous.
