2.7 4 Cyl?

In terms of Power, and also Gas Mileage, how does the 2.7L 4 Cylinder compare to the 3.4L 6 Cylinder? Does it?

I just learned the 2.7L was avail in as late a model as 1999 or 2000. Because that peaked my curiosity I spent some time on the 3rd Gen page of this website. Some good mpg threads there. It sounds like a 5speed, 4cyl 3rd gen is a pretty cool (and efficient) setup.

I'd check around on 3rd gen and do a search there.

I have the 3.4L 6 Cylinder and a buddy of mine has the 2.7L 4 Cylinder. the 2.7 will possibly outlast the 3.4, but I love the power in my 3.4. Maintance is easier on the 2.7 as well. I tow things and my buddy does not, I am sure if he had to tow stuff he would want the 3.4.

I liked mine. It felt powerful enough to me, but there is no comparison to my new v8! Gas milage was ok. 14 gallon tank was less expensive to fill, but I was only getting about 220 miles to a tank. Remember even though it's not as powerful of an engine, 150 horses, you're still asking it to pull the weight of a SUV around.

Had a 994runner with 2.7, non 4wd I was getting 18-19city, not very efficient especially when loaded cuase the engine works harder, reliable engine but had to replace the starter 2x -solenoids kept failing. The 4cyl 4runner seem rare now.

2.7L is an okay motor. Compared to the 3.4L, it pales in about every single category. I don't know of a single person that went from a 2.7 to 3.4 and regretted it. The MPG is slightly better with the 2.7, but at what cost? Any load, and it struggles (my friend has a 2.7L 5sp Tacoma, so I know this). Gotta wind it up much more to get up to speed. To me, this isn't worth the 2-3mpg's (if that). I get 22MPG on the highway, so that is good enought for me.

As far as the longetivity, I believe the 3.4L will be right up there with the 2.7L. Just take care of it, and it will last.
