2.7 auto 4x4 tire help.

So I orderd myself some 17" tundra wheels for christamss. :naughty:

Now I have to decide on a set of tires.
Stock size is 265/70/16 which is a 31 .

Im thinking of going with a 265/70/17 which is a 32 .
(ill be running a daystart 1.5" lift)


My conserns are:
Will it put alot of stress on my little 2.7 to go with 32s?

I know guys with the 3.4 dont see a major drop in MPG from just going up one inch , but would my 2.7 turn into a guzzler trying to spin the 32s?

Any info would be hlepfull. Thanks

With stock gears, kinda blew, but not much harder than 265/70/16. I regeared since to 4.56, which you might have already, I don't know.

If it's the same situation I had (3.91's, intake, full exhaust headers to tip), I was alright with it. I loved the way they looked and certainly loved the handling. MPG does take a nasty hit, I was getting 14ish... but I'm mostly a city driver. Plus, after recalculation of tire size vs gearing, etc, it evens out to around 16. Really sucks going up steep long roads (mountains, etc). Overdrive doesn't do well keeping the truck going up hills.

After gears though, much quicker, better acceleration, better mileage, awesome. I've been running the 17" Tundra wheels and 265/70/17 combo for about a year now. Average MPG is about 16 city and 20 hwy (take into account I have a lead foot and I do 90 on the freeway, yeah, I'm one of those jerks). I say it's worth it.

kinda old pic but yeah, I think the 17" Tundra rim is one of the best OEM's out there. You might want to look into 231mm Tundra brakes. With a lot of weight increase for acceleration comes a lot of weight to stop.

How would I know which gears I have? Will there be a tag on the rear diff or can I tell from the vin?

Looks like you've got 4.10 gears, which should fare better than my 3.91's did.
 
I would think 32ish would be about the limit. I would take ChildrenOfBodom's advice. He seems to be the subject expert of the 2.7L 4 squirrels of fury here. :)

I had 4.10's originally and it wasn't too bad until I lifted her and threw the 32x11.50's on there, I could get around fine but it just wasn't the same until I regeared it. I think some came stock with 4.56's but im not sure.

Yeah, you're right, some did. I'm not quite sure how to determine such, many say the plate on the drivers door jamb is inaccurate.

If you really want to know, perform the "spin and count" method:

1. Block the tires at one end of the vehicle to keep it from rolling, and then jack up a tire on the other end.
2. Place the transmission in neutral and release the parking brake if you are checking the rear diff.
3. Spin the tire exactly TWO full revolutions while at the same time counting exactly how many revolutions the driveshaft spins (marking the driveshaft and tires beforehand will make it easier to count revolutions).
4. The number of revolutions the driveshaft spins is your gear ratio.

If it spins just over 4 times, then the ratio is probably 4.10; 4-1/3 = 4.30; 4-1/2 = 4.56; just under 5 = 4.88; 5-1/3 = 5.29, etc.
 
Thanks for the replies guys, whats making the decision even harder is 265/65/17s (31s) are more expensive then 265/70/17 (32s).

guess the 70 profile is just more common?
