Well, the 3.0 was only available in the 2nd gen, so for the years you are looking at, 1995. 1996-2002 are the years of the 3rd gen.

If you do your research you'll see that the 3.0l engine has some major head gasket issues and is probably the #1 Toyota engine to stay away from. The 2.7l is pretty bulletproof.

They create the same amount of power stock so the V6 is just a problem.

I have a 2.7 and it feels kind of sluggish compared to other 3.0s ive been in.
But I dont drag race it or tow so I dont mind.

Depends what your goals are for the car, daily or serious offroad ...

I saw a 3.0 once that would do 0-60 in 3.8 seconds.

Thanks for the info. I just sold my tacoma 4x4 which had a 2.7 so I know they are bulletproof. Now that I am shopping for a 4runner, I am wondering if the 4runner is too much weight for the 2.7. I am not off-roading, just road driving.

id take a 2.7 over a 3.slow pos and would most deff take a 3.4

They did do a 3.0l in the 3rd gen, just not in North America. It was a Turbo Diesel. But i doubt thats what you were refering too.

OK, so I have eliminated the 3.0 from my search for a 4runner. What are the pros and cons of the 3.4.....how does it compare gas mileage with the 2.7? Any major mechanical drawbacks with the 3.4?

Some people, run into needing head gaskets and valve cover gaskets but its not really that common for the 3.4l. The 3.4l was built to last forever, it may be underpowered for its size but it will keep running.

X2 JohnsD90, the 3.4 was designed as a real work engine, not as a consumer market Automotive engine. It just happened to find its way into a consumer market vehicle (Tacoma, T4R, and probably some others too). Thats why it will last and last... and then last some more.

ya mine has almost 200k and it flat out ripps with a 5spd even with 4:30 gears and 285s its more in the sweet spot than it was with 265s
