2 channel amp to power 1 sub

I am in the process of installing a new sub and amp. I have a general idea on how to install it. What I dont understand is 2ohm and 4ohms and their meanings. I just bought a package deal through Crutchfield, a Boston 2 channel amp with a 12 inch Boston G1 sub with box. I understand the wiring aspects but it says when I wire the 2 channel amp to power 1 sub that it would be at 2 ohms where as the specs for the sub says it is a 4 ohm sub. I just need a better understanding on this or is there something I am missing to power this amp correctly...

your amp probably has spces for wattage @ 2 ohm and 4 ohm, if your sub is a 4 ohm when you hook it to your amp not bridged you will get the wattage your amp puts out @ 4ohms, if your bridge it im pretty sure that will run your sub @ 2 ohms

Basically amps get the greatest power at a lower resistance...or ohms. If your sub is 4 ohms, you will want to bridge the 2 channels together to get the max power from your amp. If your sub is 2 ohms, you will only need to run the sub on 1 channel. Your amp should be labeled to show you which + and - to use to correctly bridge the amp. Some multi-channel amps even give you the option of using the amp as a mono-amp by a switch on the amp, and also make sure that you have the switched placed on the LPF setting on the amp.
