2 year free maintenance

Need some input:

When I bought my 4runner, they threw in the 2 year free maintenance plan. The way it was explained to me by the dealer and by the black and white print on the brochure, I'm supposed to get an oil change, tires rotated, and a general inspection every 5,000. Well, when I brought into the dealer (which is not the one I bought it at since I'm in FL now), they refused to do the oil change stated that "since it's synthetic oil we will only change it every 10,000 miles." This sounded like complete BS to me, so I took my keys and left. Haven't had the chance to call Toyota or my dealer yet since I work all day. Anyone have any input? Anyone have this plan?

I was curious about this and when someone would have a problem with this. I remember one thread that someone was able to get theirs at the 5k mark. That sucks that you had to deal with that. So I guess 3 services at max over a 2 year period--on average...what's the manual say about tire rotation.

I heard Toyota changed oil changes to 10k or 1 yr. So if that is the case we would get 2 oil changes and tire rotation every 5k. Also a clean cabin filter at 15k with lub and re-torque propeller shaft bolt and insepections. I have not recieved a letter yet stating the oil change to 10k/1yr, but others on forum have. I am going to try to get mine changed at 5k when it comes up, the 2 yr. free maintenance is not much of a deal with 2 free oil changes.

I actually received vouchers for the service (in the mail from Toyota). I think 4 or 5, I would have to look. I put them in the glove box and waiting for the first service.

In Canada, all services are done at 8000km intervals (5k miles) with no indication or documentation about switching to 10k mile intervals.

I would presume that they assume that Canada is a "extreme" conditions zone and maintain the shorter intervals.

I'm on the 2 yr plan and my first service at 5K miles was performed free of charge.

This is what I received as well and I believe there are 5 of them. I think they basically state that they cover the manufacturers recommended maintenance schedule, so there is one for 5k, 10k, etc. They are supposed to take care of whatever maintenance is required in your manual. Since Toyota is say 10k oil changes, I think if you want it changed at 5k, you'll have to foot the bill.

I will take a look at the vouchers tonight and see if it mentions any specifics about oil changes. I just tossed everything in a file since I'll be doing my own oil changes. I'd rather go to the dentist than deal with dealer service departments.

The way I understand it is, they will change the oil at the recommended interval's, for the V6 that uses the full synthetic it's every 10,000 miles. The 4cyl is still every 5,000 miles.

Although reading the Maintenance guide, it does state this for dusty/off-road driving.

Driving on dirt roads or dusty roads:
Inspect ball joints and dust covers
Inspect drive shaft boots (4WD)
Inspect engine air filter
Inspect steering linkage and boots
Lubricate propeller shaft 3
Re-torque propeller shaft bolt 3
Replace engine oil and oil filter 1
Tighten nuts and bolts on chassis and body

Maybe you can point this out to them,and get it covered.

I'm not going to go pull my 2yr free maintenance paperwork and get the exact quote right now, but it does indicate that they will cover recommended maintenance for normal usage within the 25k/2yr, and that additional maintenance caused by the abnormal conditions (dusty/towing) gets paid for by the owner.

I was just planning on telling them I use the thing to tow small boats through corn fields every weekend and get more frequent maintenance. Whatever the exact wording was keeps them for having to pay for this.

no problem here,

went in, told them i have the 2 year thing, they asked me for my vin. put it all in the computer, i sat around for an hour and got my 4runner back oil changed, filter replaced and washed.

i went in at 6000km which is around 3700miles. i even got a free umbrella and a car wash voucher for the touchless car wash next door.

the guys real friendly and we've been taking all 4 of our toyotas to the same maintenance shop (toyota maintenance only shop not dealership) since 95.

maybe you just got a crappy dealership? try calling up another one and explaining the situation and see if you get better service.

Actually, maybe hofs05's dealership actually reads the Toyota service letters/advisories. Toyota did send a letter dated December 15, 2009 that revised the oil change intervals to every 10k for a V6 4R. My dealership was unaware until I said something about how funny it was that the oil change sticker on my new 4R had the wrong interval and wrong type of oil.
