:sadwave:Hello everyone, I recently had my oil changed and my question for you today is, Would 20w40 grade oil affect my engine and how? even though it says right on the oil cap SAE 10W30 the shop where I took it said that my 4RNR is listed to take 20W40. I find it kind of strange. Please enlighten me with your experience. Mind you, my 2WD 4RNR is a 1994 V6-EFI and has never had the engine rebuilt.

Thank you.

Hi 4rnrmaya,

I had a 1993 SR5 pick-up with a V6. The manual and the oil cap called for 10W30. You should stick with that rating. The oil pump and oil passages are designed with a certain viscosity mind. Changing viscosity could change the oil flow. Check your manual to see if there's a different rating for higher temperature climates. In hotter climates, a higher viscosity oil may be fine.

Thanks Dawg4runner, I will look further into this matter and hopefully it will be okay to run that 20/40 on my truck and if not I will make sure to replace it with 10w30.

Thank you very much for the info.
