there is so much information here, one can surely be content reading and commenting for a while. I kind of think being "forced" to learn the general tone of the forum before starting a new post, and broaden my knowledge by reading is time well spent. Not here, but on some forums about vehicles or other interests, the repetition of the same question over and over by new members is exhausting.

Most have been on forums so the idea is not new, But your point is well taken. learning the tone is an important thing, also searching YOUR problem or question you may find a thread or answer that can be expanded on rather than starting from scratch.
But some would rather jump into the new members thread and hit it 20 times to get the number. Or another favorite..... Dig up a 5 year old thread and comment. (Guilty, Because I didn't look) just to find out the OP has not logged on in three years...

Most do it to thwart spammers or bots from joining.

I guess you could always search and reply in a regional sub-forum? (The Rest of) The Deep South - Toyota 4Runner Forum - Largest 4Runner Forum :

It makes perfect sense. There’s plenty of threads around to get 20 posts. At least the mods don’t delete unnecessary replies.
