20 Years Ago Today

20 years ago today, I bought my 1st and only 4Runner. I always liked the 4Runner - but when I saw the '99 in Imperial Jade Mica with color matching bumpers and hood scoop I was sold. I wanted the rear locker and was only able to find one in SoCal so I made the trip. This 4Runner and I have been through a lot of adventures together and if I had the chance to do it over - I wouldn't change a thing.

Purchased: January 14th 1999

Congratulations on this milestone. Put me in line behind ASUMTNEER in wanting to know how many miles you've logged in your 20 year journey!

I've been extremely lucky to be able to walk to work for several years and then take the train to work for several more and only use the 4Runner for weekend fun. I bought a second car now that I'm commuting, to keep the miles to a minimum. I hit the 168,000 mark last week. The most miles in one trip was: SF -> Grand Tetons -> Yellowstone -> Bozeman -> Glacier -> Olympic -> Crater Lake -> Redwood National Park -> SF over the course of 4 weeks while fishing, kayaking, and camping. It was a trip I'll never forget.

Great story, and a testament to the greatness of the 3rd gens. Love the upgrades to keep a good clean but still original look.

I had a chance to pick up an Imperial Jade Mica back in 06 but it had 102,000 miles so I opted for an Autum Mica Blaze instead. At 115,000 miles they may bury me in this ride.

I used to walk to work in DC for years. Other than the weather obstacles it was enjoyable and put me in great health. I miss it.

Wow, looks better than new! Wish my 1999 4R Highlander that I also purchased in 99 looked nearly as good.

How much longer are you planning on keeping it?

Hey there - long time it's been !
Much like LittleCaesar, they will probably have to bury me in my truck :-)

Beautiful truck, man. And a great background story to boot. I love that the 4Runner has taken you on so many interesting trips. 168k miles is nothing, nd it looks like she has been properly cared for.

Here's to another 168k miles!

Yes, long time indeed. I remember your rig from back in the VMag Forum days in 1999/2000. I also walk to train during the week and it has kept my 99 at only 105k miles to date. I have hit my goal of keeping it for a full 20 years and sadly may let it go this year as my garage kept 2007 is the one that is getting all the attention now. Best of Luck!

'99 IJM as well. I am original owner, but the birthday is not until May. She was built in March '99.

Congratulations. Looks better than mine, I am sad to say.

Thanks for your post. How do I determine the date my 4Runner was built?

Now I feel bad I forgot the 20th bday of my '98. I bought it new in December 1998. She has changed a little here and there but I've tried to keep the mods classy. Just got back from a Mohave run and almost about to turn 149k. Snowden's Thread
