200 miles on a tank?

Hey guys I've got a 99 2.7 auto on stock tires, stock height etc.

From a total fill to E I'm getting 200 miles. I do about 75 percent city 25 highway. ( I was in 2wd the hole tank)

Its winter time so I do warm up for 2-3 minutes but not much more.

But my fuel mileage seems a little low, give me some input guys. 6cyl guys chime in too .

When I first bought my truck, I had the same issue, a 98 with 150k 3.4 6 banger. I think mine was more maintenance issues. I changed the oil, changed the brake fluid. I seafoamed everything (gas, oil, engine) Mine has picked up a little, but like you, I think its a little low too. I am interested to see what others say.
 
Winter gas has definitely had an effect on my milage. I see a big difference when I let my 3.4 idle a lot as well. I have 34" tires with 5.29's and did some idling and a lot of city driving and my light came one at 170 yesterday. Factoring in the tire size, I'm guessing I got somewhere near 200 mi. During the summer the light goes one right about 210-215.
 
ha. i wish i got 200+ i get about 150 and the light comes on. 14mpg with mostly highway.
 
You really can't go by the miles per tank. Lots of these cars, especially '99's, have flaky gauges and show empty when there are several gallons left. You need to verify miles per gallon by filling up, recording the mileage, and then recording mileage and number of gallons pumped at the next fill-up.
 
I have a standard 2.7 and I go about 300 then the gas light comes on. I get about 22-23 mpg steady. Sounds like something is wrong if you're just hitting 200.
 
Try a tune up (oil, fluids, filters, etc) and see how far that gets you. I get 220ish miles to a tank in the winter and 250-260 in the summer on regular gas. I'm running 4:10's and 33's with a slushbox too.
 
i have a 2.7L too and just got 340 on a tank...
im sorry to say but there must be something wrong with yours.
Im sure it doesnt make a big difference but ive heard idling too long to warm up isnt good for your gas mileage or engine. stick to maybe like 30 seconds and then just drive slow. its the best way to warm up your car and you will probably see instant improvement on your mpg
 
k, good to know theres hope for my truck. 200 miles per tank would get annoying .


I purchased some oil today, ngk plat plugs .

What should I do about wires, any aftermarket sets that you guys want to recomend? or just any set will do the job ? Also will any fuel filter from napa or etc do the job or should I go with a oem toyota one.

and does the 2.7 4runner have a pcv valve? if so where :hiding:
 
The gauges and low fuel lights show empty early. Look in your manual for the gas tank size. It should be 18.4 gal.

You need to calculate your mileage. Miles driven divided the gas to fill up. That will give you mpg. Looking at gas to fill will let you know that you can drive further than you think. I can drive ~100 miles after my low fuel light comes on.
 
I agree with Gerdo. The gauge is very inaccurate I use to get 250 miles easily on a tank. Now with only driving to wheeling areas, and wheeling I get about 150
 
J-money$$$ and Gerdo have a great point. Calculate it that way if you haven't already. I am experiencing the same problem with loss of MPG and have calculated in myself multiple times. Not sure what the hell it is but gonna go with winter gas for now cause I've been searching for an answer for a while now and that's the best thing I can come up with. Good luck! Can't wait for this cold weather to be out and my rig and be clean and getting better MPG's
 
Winter gas has more ethanol. Ethanol has less BTUs than real gas. Not much you can do.

More year round gas has ethanol now.
 
I usually have 3-4 gallons left when the light comes on so most of the time I ignore it. My scangaugeII is dead on accurate so I keep an eye on milage that way. BTW... when I filled up yesterday at 180 I had to stuff 14+ gallons in there.
 
I put a fresh tank of 93 into it this time, i dont remeber the gallons though so I wont be able to do a accurate text untill the next fillup.

On a slightly diffrent note, do you guys think one gas staion has better gas then another?

I was talking with my buddie today about my mileage and he asked were I fill up, I told him Stop & shop and he laughed at me. ( the savings are great , we buy alot of groceries ) .

I honestly believe most gas stations in a local area no matter the brand is pretty much equivalent . But then again I have no idea, could it make that much of a differance??
