2000 4-Runner Limited 4x4 Shocks

Greetings,

I would like to know if anyone can make a suggestion for a good all around shock to be placed on my 00' 4-Runner Limited 4x4. The vehicle is my daily driver with 49k mi on the clock and I do a bit of off roading in the California desert & mountains. The factory equiped shocks seem a bit "soft" to me...

I replaced the oem shocks on my '98 Ltd 4X4 with Bilstein sport shocks and was very pleased. The handling was hugely improved. The ride, while firmer, took on a "European" quality that I didn't find objectionable at all. I'd do it again in a minute.

I might mention that at the time I did this (c, 2001), the Bilsteins sold by TRD were said to be inferior. Mine came from (I thinkl) shox.com.

Rancho 5000s or the Rancho 9000 (adjustable valving) are good shocks, and not bad on price either.

The Bils and the PP coils (these actually are made by H&R in Germany for PP) are the wat to go if you really are going off road which I'd like to upgrade to but it wasn't in the budget at the time so I just replaced mine with new OEM and since it's the '99 coils I still have the height.
Some '00s came with the '01 coils which have one less loop and seem softer than previous gen's coils from the ride I experienced in several '01 Runners.

No offense to the guys with Ranchos but those get bad reviews from their on road performance and dont' recommend them for a daily driver.
Tokico makes the OEM shocks.

Thanks for the input. I actually own a 99' 4-Runner SR-5 4x4 and indeed it does sit about 1 inch higher due to the additional coil in the spring. I intend to switch the coils out between the vehicles shortly as I will be selling the 99' in the near future due to mileage (159k). It seems the running boards on the 00' Limited are even more susceptible to rock damage that the SR-5 so perhaps they will have to come off for the more serious trails; although it may look a bit odd...

If you want a similar OEM ride but a tad firmer, then i would also consider Monroe Sensatrac. However, if you more off-road performance, then nothing beats Bilsteins.
