2000 4Runner Cal Emissions need catalytic converts

Hi,

My 2000 4Runner needs cats. Have replaced the rear o2 sensor with 3 different ones and still get p0420. The one I found direct from Toyota is right around 2k for everything! I'm not in California but want to get a compatible long lasting replacement that my sensors/Computer will like without breaking the bank.
I found a web site that shows compatible replacements for Ca 4runners and it only shows two companies, Walker and Valina (Never heard of them). The Walker part number is 81722. Can't find a whole lot about them either.
Any suggests or links would be appreciated!

I recently had my cat stolen and when I researched new ones the only aftermarket one available for my engine was the Walker like the one you mentioned. I got it from my local muffler shop for about $180 plus the cost to weld it in. It has a 5 yr warranty and so far it works great (no check eng lights). I have yet to get the car smog checked (in Calif.). Check out the Walker website(walkerexhaust.com) and pricing on amazon.com for your cat.:guitar3:

The aftermarket cc business is a roll of the dice, from what I've been able to surmise is that they'll probably get you through emissions, but won't keep your light off for long (based on what people have shared here and on similar sites).

Of course the quality and longevity will not equal the $2000 Toyota part.:biggrin2:

I agree, but as outrageous as Toyota's cost is, the aftermarket quality is equally ridiculous. It just seems as though there is no middle ground - I'd gladly spend $600 on aftermarket cats if I had any confidence it could perform to the truck's design point (i.e., satisfy the ECU) for a few years. The direct-fit product I got from Walker would not have lasted, it looked like a kindergardner welded the thing together.
 
Well, that's pretty much what my research so far has found. I did find a complete Bosal set (both cats and pipe) that looked ok in the pics. Have read very little about them. I wish I could at least get the Toyota's for 1k. I wouldn't like it but at least I wouldn't feel like I was being scalped!
Well, since I did pass emissions in my state with flying colors just two weeks prior to my cat death sentence I may just spring for one of those URD simulators and forget about it. It's much cheaper than the cats and labor to install that won't last 2 years... Shame....
 
I feel your pain! Bosal parts do look *nicer* though, I agree.
If your actual emissions are doing well, I'd go with the sim too.

I did see somone on the other Toyota forum suggested using a drilled-out plug non-fouler on the rear O2 sensor to possibly "fix" the CEL, but I haven't heard of anyone trying it on these trucks to see if it'd actually work. It's something like $5 for one of those though. I can sort of see how it'd work - since the sensor wouldn't see as much of the exhaust flow, the measured oscillations (how it determines if the cat is below performance) could be minimized because it'd effectively be measuring the same [trapped] exhaust rather than constantly sampling new exhaust. Dunno if I'm justifying that in my head or if it's a real possibility... :confused:
 
Oh, have you noticed any change in fuel economy?

Right around the same time as my P0420 woes started, mine dropped by about 30-60 miles per tank, but that also corresponded to the winter months and it has since come back up.
 
Good luck on the search. There are hundreds of used catalytic converters sitting in the junkyard, but federal law prohibits reselling catalytic converters! What a crock!

You could try to get a Magnaflow universal cat and have it welded in.
 
I have a new CA complient cat for sale, for 3rd gen 4runner, have receipt and warranty card for it. It meets all CA codes and standards. Selling for dirt cheap. PM ME YOUR PHONE, I am in SOCAL.

What year 4runner is it for? the 2000 has the dual cat set up and according to the Email I got from Walker they don't even offer anything that is actually legal for use in CA for these trucks. I've been putting off getting mine smog checked for a couple weeks trying to come up with a solution.

buy one of these and go on amazon and buy a cheap high flow magna flow cat for like 50$....thats what i did a year ago, if you live in cali then might be more of a pain if theres a sniffer test...just my 2 cents. hope it helps:roadkill:
