2000 4Runner EGR valve

I have a 2000 4Runner 4cylinder and the check engine light has been steadily on for awhile. I took it to AutoZone and they hooked up the tool and said it was the EGR valve. Since these are about $160 and I'd like to avoid that - has anyone had any experience solving this problem without replacing the valve.

The car has 146,000 miles on it & runs great -I just replaced plugs & plug wires and I am getting 21-24mpg consistently. Thanks!

I would just pony up and replace it. You can probably drive without it but you won't pass emmissions and your fuel mileage will decrease. I have had EGR problems with cars in the past and there is no "rig fix" as far as I know. Once you replace it you won't have to again as long as you own the vehicle.

EGR Valve

I have a 2001 4Runner and I can't find my EGR valve. The Haynes manual has some good descriptions, but none of the illustrations shows anything like my engine bay. Anyone got a picture of one? Is it under the throttle body? Behind the engine against the firewall?

How do you know if the EGR valve is bad without plugging in scanner?
