2000 4Runner Key Programming Instructions

Below are the instructions I just used to successfully reprogram a freshly cut transponder key blank I purchased on e-bay on my 4Runner. This method is supposed to work on 1998-2001 Models.

4Runner Key Programming
Add Duplicate Key

1.Simultaneously depress and release brake and accelerator pedals 1 time.
2.Insert master key into ignition
3.Within 15 seconds depress and release accelerator pedal 5 times.
4.Within 20 seconds depress and release the brake pedal 6 times and remove key.
5.Within 10 seconds insert new key into ignition.
6.Within 10 seconds depress and release the accelerator pedal 1 time.
7.After 80 seconds new key is registered and security light goes off.
8.Remove new key and depress and release brake pedal 1 time.

This method works! '99 Limited Auto 4x4. I read several other threads on programming a new transponder key and began to be convinced I was going to have to throw myself to the mercy of the dealer, OMG! Then I ran into this thread. Thank you SkyRat!!! You saved me untold $$, time and heartburn at the dealer. Bought the key online $18. Local locksmith charged $35 to cut it (rip off). Instructions from the key source didn't work, but this process worked! Thanks again.

Need help

Hi all,

I'm trying to follow the instructions but doesn't seem to be working for me. Have tried multiple times w/ no success. I too have a 2000 4Runner Limited.

Only difference that I can tell is that i have a spare set of keys (along w/ a master key) that were given to me buy the dealer when I bought the truck used several years ago (non-toyota dealer).

The spare set of keys all unlock locks and can get the accessories enabled but don't start the truck. It turns the crank over but never actually starts it. The toyota dealer where i service the truck said that these keys appear to be valet keys and need to be reprogrammed. I'm thinking it's weird that valet keys don't turn the car on but okay.

Any help in re-programming the key to start the engine is greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance.

I only have one key for my 00 runner that does everything. It's not a factory key but since it does everything does that mean it's a master key? Can I ise it to program another key?

this will not work if you have a valet key as you only key. The computer will not recognize a valet key to do the programming sequence

This worked for me; I have a '99 Limited, I bought 2 new transponder keys on Amazon for around $15 and programmed them both using the instructions you gave us. Thanks!!
