2000 4Runner Limited radio backlight dimming

Folks,

I have a very strange problem that just developed with my 2000 4Runner Limited.

The radio usually have two levels of back lighting, dimmer when the headlights switch is in the on position, and breighter when the headlight switch is in the off position.

Recently, something faulted and im not sure what. Now, the radio backlighting is dead when the headlights switch is in the on position, and its very faint when the headlight switch is in the off position.

The airconditioning/Heater panel works the same way as far as having two levels of back lighting. This still works fine and did not fault like the radio did. However, a little while ago, half of the LCD screen on that unit lost ist back lighting. That is however a different problem.

I guess i have two questions. Does this sound like one set of backlight or LED in the radio got burned out. If so, any info on its location, replacement, etc will be appreciated. Or is it a control issue, relay, fuse, etc? A wiring diagram may help answer this, but i dont have one.

The other question, is also regarding the LED backlighting in the AC control unit. Does anyone have info on the replacement too?

I wonder how easy it will be to get to those units and get them out to troubleshoot. I figured it will be nice to talk to someone that has been there before i start the project.

The light on my ac control panel is doing the same thing as yours! It just seems to be the right 1/3 of it, and it just flickers every now and again, but i would definitely be interested in hearing whats wrong/how to fix your problem! Let me know if you find anything out.

I had the same problem with my 99 Limited. I was able to pull the A/C control box and replace the LED lights. Those little bulbs will run you about $7.00 a piece and from my memory, you'll need 2. The problem with your radio may be that you just need new bulbs but I don't have experience with that. The process to replace the A/C bulbs is fairly simple. I would explain it myself but somebody at www.Yotatech.com did a much better job than I ever could and included some nice photographs as well. Go to the Forums page and look for 99+ LTD Auto CC LIght Replacement. It may be worth replacing the bulbs on your radio while you have it all pulled apart. I'm not computer savvy enough to attach the link here but if you can't find it, send me an e-mail and I'll get it to you. Hope it works out, I remember how annoying it was looking at a dim panel. did replacing the bulbs fix the issue? I am having the same problem. Whenever i hit a bump it blinks. Uses to blink OFF when i hit a bump. Now it is always off and it blinks ON when i hit a bump. Kind of annoying!

im having the same problem..i took the dash apart and removed the unit and cleaned the connectors...it worked for 1 night and now its out again..has anybody actually had any permanent success in this endeavor?:lightsaber:

I've only read of some buying replacement LCD screens due to this issue and painstakenly soldering them in. There is an outfit that rebuilds these HU's. Not too expensive, but generally more expensive then replacing with an aftermarket HU, if that is an option.
