2000 4Runner stock speakers suck!

2000 4Runner audio upgrade, please help!

Hey all,

I'm new to the forums and wanted some info from some enthusiasts. I don't like going to retail store because most of the time they don't know what they're talking about.

Anyways, I'm looking to upgrade my sound in my 2000 4Runner. Right now it doesn't sound that clean. I've been reading some threads and visiting websites. I'm leaning towards:

Head Unit: Stock, how many watts does it kick?
Front components: Infinity Kappa 60.5cs
Back speakers: Infinity Kappa 52.5i

crutchfield.com and Infinity says the speakers will fit and i've had a good experience with Infinity's so i'm biased but not set on it. And my stock head unit is fine for now, until I have more money to buy a better one. But I think my rear speakers are 5-1/2" but people say some 5-1/2"s don't fit.

I'm new to car audio, I'm looking to spend $300~$500. I want better sound and not looking for anything too conspicuous. My neighborhood isn't that great and don't want my stuff jacked. I am open about all ideas though including a new head unit (eclipse) and subwoofer.

What does everyone else with ~2000 4Runner have?
What fits and what do you recommend?

I have a 99 4runner and replaced everything. Get a new deck, don't keep the stock one.

As for the speakers, the front doors will hold 6 1/2's, but 5 1/2's won't fit in the back door, especially Infinity's since they are a lot deeper.

I actually tried putting some 5 1/2 Infinity reference speakers in the back door and they wouldn't fit. Sucks, but you'll have to go with 4 1/2.

I have an Alpine 9805 deck, Infinity Reference 652i in the front and 452i in the back, along with a Kenwood 12" sub in the rear running off a small 100w Kenwood amp. It's a decent little system for the price.

My 4runner has already been broken into once, so I'm not trying to put too much into it, just to have it all stolen again.

It looks like a decent system there. I am thinking about putting something similar in my 4Runner.

When you installed your Infinity Reference Speakers, did you have to use an adaptor for both front and back? and are those speakers running off of your deck or your amp?

Yeah, I bought some speakers adpaters from a guy online ... here is his web site:

He has 6 1/2 adapters for the front door and 4" & 5" adapters for the back doors. I actually bought both the 4" & 5" adapters. The 5" will hold the speakers, but infinity's go too deep. I even tried using spacers on top of it, but then the door panel wouldn't go back on.

So you'll have to get the 4" if you want Infinity's.

All four speakers are running off of my deck for now. I plan on getting a 4 or 5 channel amp in the next month or so.

Infinity Basslink

I'm probably gonna go with the Infinity basslink. I've been reading reviews on it and people LOVE it. I can probably get one around $200. So i'll probably spend around $300 total which is within my budget.

The statement on my subject line isn't entirely right. The stock speakers are decent. I'll leave them alone for now.

I don't know, I have a 2001 and the word SUCK comes to mind when I listen to my speakers.

I'm probably going to leave them on for now. But i'll let you know if i'm going to sell them. I'm wondering why you would want them though.
