Our 2000 5sp has 199,600 on her and yesterday my wife gets stuck on the side of the road, woun't go uphill. Push in the clutch pedal, put it in gear and nothing happens. What's then first thing I should be looking for? Thanks.

Does sound like the clutch. Was it slipping before?

If you put it in 4 lo and 1st gear will it move?
If so, you might be able to move it.

clutch problem

I never noticed it slipping, just came on out of the blue. Could this be the slave cylinder or a spring? Everything under the dash looks normal, nothing broken or loose.

Usually when the slave cylinder fails you get the opposite problem, the clutch won't release.

It's possible something is jammed. Does the pedal feel normal?

Clutch problems

Are you experiencing any grinding when putting the transmission into gear while the clutch is engaged?

problem

No, no noise at all, just push the pedal to the floor and put it in gear and let the clutch back out. Nothing happens.

Well aren't you guys a bundle of glad tidings. That's what I suspected but hope springs eternal that it was some easy fix. Yes it's a 4x4 and has never been off road (I'm the second owner for the last 5k miles and I know the prev owner).
Now i'll have to decide if it's worth spending the $ to put in a new clutch or just part it out. A shame as it's really in vg condition.

I'm not convinced; no slipping prior to now, then suddenly won't pull in any gear/direction?

Have you tried 4wd to see if the front axle will turn?
