2000 Limited AC Unit not working...known problem?

Hi, guys first post!

Looking at a 2000 Limited 4WD.

First off the AC does blow cold air, so that is not the problem.

The AC unit is a bit querky though, to turn on the unit you engaged the fans first, not by pushing the AC button. Sometimes the AC button wouldn't turn on when you pushed it as well. Could not get the auto button to light up at all after playing around with it at the dealership, same with the defrost button.

Is this a known problem for the older Limiteds?

Also if I needed to get it replaced how much are we talking here?

I just swapped out the whole control unit in my '99 Limited. It was relatively cheap to get a replacement from a place nearby here in Portland. My father-in-law paid for it, but it was less than $200 for the new unit including the install from his mechanic. I think he traded my old one for the new (refurbed) one we got. The one we got as a replacement looked pretty nice (no scratches or dings like the one we traded in.
