After driving a half-ton GMC Sierra for 20 years, I bought a 2000 Limited a month ago, and since then have been getting used to its ride and handling. We wanted a smaller vehicle that would be comfortable on the highway and able to go off the pavement with comfort and ability. I think the 4Runner fits that bill perfectly.
THE SMARTEST THING I DID OUT OF THE GATE WAS REGISTER HERE!
I'm not a Car Guy, just intelligent enough to "ask those who know" or read what they say—that would be the Forum members here. I've made additions (read below) based on comments and opinions here and couldn't be happier.
So, back to the 4Runner…
We didn't know its prior history, so have had the engine tuned, new shocks, front brakes/rotors, timing belt, and other as-needed items. I made a deal with my mechanic, he did most of the work in trade for the ol' pickup, so we both benefited. I had Les Schwab put a set of Wide Country AT tires on a week ago and the ride improved significantly. I'm still unsure of the springs, so we'll check those next. I'm taking it one aspect at a time.
The biggest items added (that you can see) are the BajaRack (The Mule) and two 4-gallon RotopaX fuel cans. While I'm pleased to get ~18 mpg around town, the tank isn't large for those barren wastes in SE Oregon's high desert (gas availability is questionable in some places) so extending the 4Runner's range seemed the first order of business, after the mechanicals.
Yesterday I took a photo of the Limited. Can't promise it will look the same next year, but you never know!
