2000 Runner - Adding an amp to OEM speakers?

Ponti, my install guy said my DNX 5120 which is 50W x 4 would be just fine in mine, he said the stock speaks from Toyota are actually not a bad speaker I forgot who he said makes them but hey at least he was not trying to sel me news ones. Now it will not be like buying Bose but it will be ok. What HU do you have? Stock or new? Maybe Tarheel can weigh in as he works in the industry.
I may upgrade the speakers later, but I am over my 1K budjet right now so back to saving.

This probably wouldn't be my first step for better sound. Adding a new HU can make a big difference and if you have any thought of doing this in the future I would go ahead and do it now. If your set on not getting a new HU why not go ahead and just spend another $100-$200 and get new speakers?

Hey Guys thanks. Well, I lost my job a few months back and was stockpiling part for a new audio system. I got as far a buying a Kenwood DPX502 HU and Sony XM-4S amp (4x50W). Thinking it would be some time before I decided to complete the package with the Focals I want - it seemed a low priority as the oem system was working fine and had other expenses. Well, the other day I decided at least I can install the HU and enjoy that. By the way, I am so impressed with how it sounds with the new HU. Night and day. The DPX502 looks great, love the features, but do admit the menu system is a bit tedious - but I've worked through it.
I wanted to know if it would be ok to amp it with with the oem speakers? So I guess they can handle it?

Ponti, do you plan on hooking up a sub? Just wondering why you want to amp factory speakers. I wouldn't recommend it since the speakers will just distort at higher volumes. Your aftermarket HU is probably the best upgrade to sound for your current setup. Your probably running about 22 watts rms to the speakers with the new HU and I'm wondering if you would still need the speakers louder. If your really pushing them but need more then I would try bass blockers first. That should clean up the midranges and give you better sound.
Yeah, I don't know much about car stereos (but am a pretty handy guy and don't mind tackling the install of these components), but like the HU - I have the amp just laying around and maybe thought I could get away with installing with the factory speakers. Yup, 22 watts is what the new HU is pushing and is pretty loud. I agree, if I installed the new amp it would do nothing but distort the sound. I'll have to wait until I get the new components speakers up front and new rear door speakers. Don't plan to push a woofer, but we'll see.
The DPX502 fit like a glove and soldered the connections with the Crutchfield harness. Which I felt was the hardest part. Now my Runner is begging me to finish the job right with the new speakers. I may have to cut back on some food for a while and get the focals I want....?

i'm running an alpine dvd unit connected to an alpine 5x50w digital amp using the oem speakers. (i bought infinity ref speakers but got lazy and haven't installed them yet) although the factory speaker sound quality is not the greatest, the speakers can handle the added power and plays very loud without distorting. of course, i used the unit's crossover to cut the most low and some of midbass frequencies. i actually, surprised some of my friends- they thought i was running aftermarket speakers. gl.
