2000 Stereo into 1999?

My new to me 1999 Runner had an aftermarket (and broken) Alpine stereo in it when I bought it. I picked up a used stock Toyota unit on e-Bay, I was told from a 2000 (but I am not sure...the face of it matches the one in the picture of my 1999 owners manual).

Anyhow, when I went to install it, the connector from the AMP to the head unit is different.

Anyhow happen to have or know where to find.
1) wiring diagrams?
2) a female connector (for the back of the radio) for a 2000 radio
3) or better yet maybe an old amp from a 2000 Runner that has undergone an upgrade to a new sound system.

Is your amp from the factory? If so, the connections TO the amp will be what you plug into the back of your new factory radio. Just pull the factory amp out of there if that is the case. Hope that makes sense.

The 2000 radio I bought is just the radio no amp...ie I didn't get the amp with it, but should have. It appears that they changed the radio and amp from 1999 to 2000 and thus the connector from amp to the radio is different?

There are two connectors that go into the original 1999 amp and one connector that comes out of it with a long pigtail. The old Alpine unit was connected (with some kind of aftermarket connector kit) to the 1999 amp. So I guess that means that the Alpine head was putting out signal and using the Toyota AMP to drive things?

I disconnected the amp and tried what you suggested but the two connectors from the amp don't fit into the radio either. I think I need to try a salvage yard maybe and find a 2000 amp to match this radio I bought, or figure out the wiring so I could rig it that way.

The connector apears to be different because you are missing the amp that the wiring harness plugs into, and then the amp has a wire with the connector that plugs into the radio.
The alpine unit has an adapter that plugs intovthe stock harness. You don't need that. You probably need the Toyota amp, the alpine unit did not use it.
Also, why would you want to put the factory radio and amp back in, its terrible...

Are the wires spliced from the amp to the connector that was to be plugged into the Alpine unit? Pictures would help too.

Thanks for the replies guys. I understand this stock radio will be nothing great, but I figured it would be easy (not so far!) and cheap (into for $40 so far). My son would agree with you, but to upgrade it is new head unit, new speakers, new separate amp, install...before you know it is at least $1000.

Anyhow, photos attached. Showing old amp (it had some aftermarket connector, seen with wires cut, that was used to splice to dead Alpine unit), also shot of amp connector, shot of new 2000 radio, shot of rear of that, and close up of 2000 input connector (I think the other connector on the back of the 2000 radio is perhaps for external CD changer, if installed?)

Strange, why would they install it that way, I wonder. So the car plugs into the amp, the amp plugs into the headunit, but it won't plug in? You know there is an adapter plugged in from the alpine head unit.

The amp I need to install this Toyota CD head unit is part number
86280-35080.

Anybody happen to have one sitting on a shelf somewhere?

Looked on Ebay, found the correct AMP for this radio for $20. Should have it in a few days and hopefully problem solved. Thanks all for the help.

Do you still have that first amp? I'm trying to reinstall my stock radio (casette and am/fm radio only) and found out that the installers of my aftermarket H/U took out the amp.

Are you SURE it had an amp? I took out the stock cassette/AM/FM HU from my '99 the first week and there was no amp. I installed it in a kid's beater that only had a radio and it worked fine for years--until he wrecked the car.

There were like 4 different factory sound systems in '99. Some did not have amps, (at least one, anyway).
