2001 4Runner, ABS, Brake!, both VSC lights, locked in Park

Hello everyone.

I have searched the forums relatively well, and can't find anyone yet who's had the same exact problem as me. I parked my 4runner in the driveway the other night, as per usual, on flat ground. When I came out the next day to start it up, the ABS, both VSC, and Brake! lights came on, and it won't shift out of Park unless I use the shift lock override button. Can anyone relate to this? Otherwise, it starts up fine, and when I shift into Drive using the override, it seems to move and brake just fine. I've tried easy fixes like the gas cap, disconnecting the neg. battery terminal, etc. I did take out the Mass Air Flow sensor last summer to clean it, but otherwise haven't worked on the vehicle at all. Any help is much appreciated.

Did you check the fuses? Sounds like you've lost the ABS controller. Might be as simple as a fuse, or you might need to ray:

I have tried checking the fuses, but unfortunately don't know exactly what to look for. I looked at the two larger ones by the MAF sensor, as well as the one in the box by the battery, but don't see anything unusual. Will there be an obvious sign if one of them is bad?

You really need to pull them out to see the element, or check them with a meter while they're plugged in. There's a fuse box under the dash too. I'm not sure where the ABS fuse is located.

Check this thread out. These guys are using this fault to disable the traction control by installing a switch in line with the pressure sensor. This sounds exactly like what you're seeing, so you may have a bad pressure sensor.

Thanks for the input. I'm still trying to figure it out. There are two fuses for ABS on the passenger side, and another in the box near the battery. I can't get the one in the fuse box by the battery out. Any tricks on how to remove stuck(ish) fuses would be appreciated.

So I ended up finding the problem. It was the 10amp "ECU-IG" fuse. All I had to do was replace it, and viola, problem solved. However, it has blown once more since I replaced it, so I'm assuming there may be a deeper issue. If anyone knows of an issue like this, please chime in. Thanks

Fyi in case it helps you in the future that "stuck" abs fuse is actually screwed in from the bottom, you have to disassemble the box some to get to it.

So now I'm a bit more curious. It was the ECU-IG fuse that blew, and now it's blown several more times. I've used almost a whole pack of 10amp fuses. The last one I put in blew immediately when I fired the truck back up. There were originally no codes. Now it's throwing P0500. Any ideas out there would be helpful.

po500 is vehicle speed sensor and a abs vsc ecu commonly goes bad in the 01 02 4runners

Any ideas on the repeated blown fuse. Seems like there are various theories as to the ABS unit going bad.

Please help! 2001 4Runner windows stopped working; fuse issue?

I have a 2001 4Runner. I noticed yesterday that all my windows (except my driver's seat window and the sun roof) stopped working. I can't roll down the passenger seat window, either of the rear seat windows, or the hatch window. They don't work regardless of whether I try from the driver's seat door console or from each particular door itself. Does anyone know specifically which fuse I need to replace? Or is this a different, non-fuse-related problem? Thanks!

please help! electical issues

I just had the same exact thing pop up yesterday after I used 4 Lo to get up a steep incline. After I switched it back to regular 2wd I noticed the abs, vsc, and traction control lights didn't go off. but after about 15 mins of driving they went off and everything is back to normal. that happened 2 more times yesterday, I just shut the truck off to run in and go to the store or run errands and when I got back the lights were back and the shifter was stuck. I'm not sure if it has anything to do with my locks. ive been having really bad issues with my locks with them freaking out and locking constantly by themselves when I'm driving or just in park. I notice the locking gets more intense when the turn signal is on. or if I hit the power window switch the locks with cycle. I replaced the main ground on the battery and that solved everything completely for about a week and now everything is back. I cant even leave the keys in the ignition because it will lock me out of my truck. does anyone have any ideas? I'm scared ill have to take it into the stealership to get it sloved. ive tried looking it up on different threads but nothing has helped. ive removed and checked all the switched and electronics but nothing helped. thankyou

You may need a new ABS controller module. I actually have an entire spare Master Assembly for the 2001 model with all components together. It swaps right in. If you want to buy it send me a private message.

I also have a separate ABS module that is still attached to my old bad master assembly that failed on me. If you know exactly what part of the master assembly you need, I can sell you my old assembly unit and you can take the pieces you need from it (My pump and/or accumulator was bad...the ABS controller is still good as are other parts).

The 2001 and 2002 4Runner have very expensive Brake Master Assembly designs. I just went through this ordeal recently and learned that this is among the most expensive failures you can experience on this model. Toyota will charge you $3000 for a new Master Assembly installed. You cannot find a new assembly unit for sale for less than $1000. I am selling my one GOOD Master Assembly (used with 100K miles) for far less.

Hopefully your problem ends up being an easy fix. But if you need any parts of the Master Assembly PM me.

ECU-IG fuse blown

Hey all,
New to this forum and could use some help.
I have a 2002 4runner and it has been a great vehicle.
I am having the same issue as OP and decided to check the ECU-IG fuse and sure thing it was blown.
Opened up the rear door to get at my tools to pull the fuse, replaced the fuse and all my dash warnings cleared, electric windows worked, and could shift no problem.
I thought all was good until I closed the rear door, the fuse blew right away.
Opened the rear door, replaced the fuse and all seemed fine again.
Shut the back door thinking that something was shorting when I shut the door,replaced the fuse and the fuse blew as soon as I started the vehicle.
I took the back door panel off and started looking for a shorted wire, every thing looked ok.
Is there a switch to confirm the door is shut that could be bad?
The vehicle drives fine, just have those error messages,no windows, no
speedometer, no odometer, and cant get out of park without using the override switch.

I took the back door panel off and started looking for a shorted wire, every thing looked ok.

the door switch shorts to ground for the 'door open' indicator - so that isn't the issue.

Most likely, it is the wiring in the harness that goes from the body to the door. You'll have to remove the door panel and the b-pillar panel and get access to the section of harness that goes through the rubber boot between the door and body. You should be able to pull it out of the body and into the door. I bet you find a broken/shorted wire or two in there hidden under the rubber boot.
