its in Hawaii and would the lower balljoints need to be replaced? What price do you think I can get it for?
its listed as 2001 Toyota 4Runner 4x4 Sport Edition. Drives and runs no issues. No check engine lights, 4x4 works flawlessly. Timing belt and water pump done at 140k miles. asking 7k

You can scratch this question off your to ask list. Everyone on this forum will tell you to replace the ball joints as it isn't worth the risk and to only use OEM balljoints.

That seems a little high, but I don't know what Hawaii prices are compared to New England. The high end KBB around here would probably be around $6000 private sale in very good to excellent condition. I just picked up a clean 2001 SR5 with 175k and a good frame for $3500 which I plan to just flip for around $5000 to a guy I know who is looking for a 4Runner. If he doesn't buy it I'll detail it and fix a couple of minor items and put it on the side of the road for $6000 OBO. As far as the ball joints I am a believer in not changing parts that aren't bad, so if the boots are ripped or there is ANY play in them replace them with 555 brand ones (OEM) You can get them from Toyota, Napa's Altrom line or Low Range Off Road otherwise leave them alone. I fix cars for a living and have only seen one Taco separate a lower ball joint in the 23 years since the 96's came out. (the guy was actually on his way to his buddy's garage to do the ball joints and, yes, he did total the truck) I think if you could pick it up for $55-$6500 you'd be doing alright.

You're in HI, are there many Good choices? I looked on craigslist, never seen so many runners being parted out in a listing for a given area!

Did 01s have an e-locker option?
I thought they made do with the abs-driven "locking" diff. Subaru-style.
The center diff can be locked, but not the rear.

No. Yet in can be added if really necessary, it does have a not quite equivalent center locker (locks both axles together then each handles their own wheel spin).
Pretty effective for me in central texas with no snow and lots of mud and sand, rock, loose soil, ect. to be found here. :cowboy:
