2001 SportRunner 4WD Progress Thread

Aloha, new to the forums. I've been lurking the 3rd gen section for a couple of months now while I was searching for my own 3rd gen 4Runner. I have found many of the DIYs, build threads, and buyer's guide as excellent sources of information. It appears T4R.org has not seen the type of rapid decline of activity due to social media that is apparent in other forums I participate in.

While not new to Toyota or wrenching, I'm new to the 4Runner. I was given permission (by the wife) to purchase an extra larger vehicle this year under one condition: automatic transmission. With that restriction my search began for either a garage queen Tacoma Prerunner or 2WD 4Runner (my wife really wanted a Lexus RX330/350).

The Toyota Corolla, Tacoma, 4Runner, and Lexus RX is Hawaii's bread and butter. Because of that, resale values are very high. We can expect to pay 1.5 - 2x the KBB value of the above cars.

After looking at several 3rd Gen 4Runners and Lexus RXs I finally found "the one": 2001 Sport 4WD in Millennium Silver with 180k miles, originally a California car.

I purchased it from the 2nd owners (who owned it since 60k miles). This car has always been serviced at a Toyota dealer except for the last 10k miles. The overall condition of the car is GOOD; paint is in great shape, body/underside has no rust, but the interior is a little dirty (mostly the carpet, probably due to their toddler). This car spend the beginning of it's life as a garage queen and was eventually used as their daily beater. No signs of off-road or recreational use (despite the 4WD). No accident car, all original body panels however the front and rear bumpers have been repainted at some point in it's life.

Current Issues:
With the broken-in mileage, the car does have a few issues
1) Some play in steering. Approximately 1" of play (steering wheel circumference) up to the rack input shaft/universal joint with no movement of tie rods. I'm thinking a rebuilt rack will remedy this.
2) Driver's door lock is finicky. Replace locking actuator.
3) Power antenna mass is missing/broken (motor still winds). New antenna mast or fixed/Tacoma antenna.
4) Blown rear shocks. Replace, likely fronts need replacement too.
5) Broken clock, just stopped working. DIY solder fix or replace.

The intend of this thread is to document the progress of this car (maintenance, repairs, and modifications).

Thanks for the comments.

Looks great! What size are the tires?
Tires are 265/70/R16, Bridgestone Dueler H/L Alenza Plus (eco, low rolling resistant tires). Once they wear away, I'll replace them with something a little more meaty.

When replacing the rack, I would also do Poly rack bushings from Wheeler's offroad.
Thanks, I'll look into that.

I uploaded a couple of new photos after cleaning/cutting the paint. I used mostly over the counter products:
- Meguiar's Clay bar kit
- Meguiar's DA with 6" & 4" Foam polish pads
- Meguiar's Ultimate Compound
- Meguiar's Ultimate Liquid Wax

I also removed the OEM hood and sunroof deflector. I also removed the OEM roof racks for cleaning. I'm thinking about replacing the window deflectors with the slip-in Weathertech ones.

great looking truck. I spent 5+ years in Oahu and miss it every day! I know the pain of resale there! I was in the market for a TJ Wrangler when I lived there and payed a pretty penny for it. I had it for <6 months before I took it off-roading and through a mud hole. Long story short, I think the tranny got clogged and it caught fire! Haha. was still under warranty. Previous week I had taken it to Jeep/Dodge/Chrysler in Kaneohe for it "randomly spraying tranny fluid all over my engine bay."

All right gang, looks like I may need some suspension advice. The rear of my 4Runner was bottoming out while hitting speedbumps at moderate speeds. It didn't appear that my rear springs were sagging very much, so I went ahead and ordered stock replacement Bilstein shocks (HD/4600). I did not take any before measurement, primarily since I wasn't expecting a ride height change with just shocks alone.

Unfortunately this did not fix my bottoming out issue. The front definitely takes the bumps a lot better, but the back feels almost the same. Based on many of the threads on this page, I'm thinking OME 880/906 combo. However, it seems like the majority of OME 880/906 users pair these springs with either Bilstein 5100 or OME shocks. Anyone have experience pairing OME 880/906 springs with the Bilstein HD/4600 shocks?

The OME 880/906 appeals to me for the following reasons:
- I do not plan to add any major weight to my vehicle.
- I do not plan to do any type of towing.
- I want a minimum/no lift.
- Sounds like 99 springs will sag with moderate cargo/passenger loading like the stock springs.

SHOCKS:
Bilstein B6, HD Shock, Front (24-187244)
Bilstein 4600 Series Shock, Rear (24-024518)

These ran me $333.77 shipped from TireRack.com. Fairly simple install with. The top nuts for the rear shocks were the hardest to remove/install.

On mine all I needed was a new bushing at what I would call the steering box (but that's not the right name for it). The whole thing would shift 1/2" before the wheels would start to move.

Those shocks will work perfectly fine with the OME coils. The only thing is that they have been known to be a little harsher and firmer that the 5100's and they won't allow as much travel as the 5100's. But considering you have already bought them, they'll work great with those coils!

Hi, Charlene! Could you please let me know which 5100's I can put on my 99 front and 906 rear? I will appreciate your help, thanks.

For the front there are the tundra 5100's with 5 selectable perches and the part number is BIL 24-188265 (these will provide a more firm ride) and then there are the tacoma 5100's with 3 selectable perches and the part number is BIL BE5-D558-TO (softer ride). For the rear, the 5100 part number is Bil 4R5100 or 9602E703 (longer travel i.e. superflex or LC coils).

Thanks for the info. Sounds like harsher ride it is. Now to find the best price with shipping to Hawaii.

Fixed / Taco Whip Antenna
I don't really care for the power antenna and know that it's a common failure on the 3rd gen 4Runner so I decided to order a replacement from Amazon.com. The parts cost a little more than I expected.

Antenna Assembly (86300-35090) - $57.76
Antenna Mast (86309-0C020) - $29.81
