2001 Starting out noise..

Hi I am new here and new to having a 4Runner. I just purchased this about 3 weeks ago. But this is a 2001 with only 56,800mi. It runs great but it makes a noise everytime I start out on a hill. I hear a noise comming from the engine compartment. Sounds like some kinda pump running for 2 sec. and then stops. But it only does it on a steep hill when pulling out from a stop. I do have the 4 wheel ABS, Anti skid control, and I think traction control on it. I have heard that it might have something to do with the ABS?

I tried to do a search for this on here but I cant find anyone else complaining about this issue.

Do all 4Runners with ABS make this noise or do you all think I have something going bad? Oh and I tested the 4 wheel drive the other day and it also does it in 4 lo and hi. but the only difference is that it does it everytime i pull out not just on hills like in 2 wheel. I would appreciate anyones input on this matter!! I never heard anything like this b4 on another vehicle and I only have a 30 day/500mi. warantee on this thing so I need to work the bugs out real quick!! Thanks..

Rest easy...that noise is perfectly normal.

probably the abs solenoids kicking on to prevent your car from rolling backwards.

Sounds like it is the Brake Booster pressurizing, it is perfectly normal...

the reason you dont hear it on most other cars is because usualy the brake booster runs off the accesory beli(ie. the engine) in 3rd gen 4runners, toyota made the brake booster run of of an eletric motor. the noise is the motor kicking in.

Hey thanks!! Good to hear!! The private dealership where i bought it from said there was a lady lookin to buy it but then heard that noise and said she was'nt gonna buy it til they get that fixed. Well they had their mechanic look at it and he supposedley had no idea what it was. So he said he called Toyota and they said it was supposed to do that also. But I just wanted to make sure. Thanks for the info!!
