I have a 2001 4runner that has been making a mysterious clicking noise for a couple weeks, usually soon after stopping the vehicle. Today I found the noise is coming from the ABS Motor solenoid (located by feel while my girlfriend pumped the brakes). The solenoid clicks when the ABS motor stops spinning. The motor usually cycles on and off once a minute or so in stop and go traffic, staying on for about five seconds per shot.
Also, I discoverd that when at a stop I can push the brake pedal to the floor without too much effort. The more I pump the pedal the more the ABS motor runs and the more solenoid clicks. I've had the 4R for six weeks now and noticed the clicking more after I drove it too fast over a harsh washboard road. The brakes work fine in stopping the vehicle and there's no ABS warning lights on.
Just wondering if this is normal behavior or not?
The fluid resevoir is full of fresh clean fluid. From previous experience on other vehicles, when the brake pedal goes to the floor it means the fluid has boiled - but that was only after repeated high speed stops had overworked the brakes.
