2001 Toyota 4 Runner- Maintenance Suggestion

I have a 2001 4Runner, which has 77K miles, runs great and have not experience any problem yet. I was wondering do I need to do any maintenance, (i.e., timing belt, Automatic transmission fluid flash, water pump replacement etc.). What kind of maintenance work do I really need for my vehicle. Any suggestion..

I have not changed my vehicle’s break pad. I checked the break pads by a reputed auto repairing shop and reported my break pads are still okay. I Lately experiencing vibration while pressing break. What are the recommended break pad I should use.


Any suggestion will be highly appreciated..

Welcome to the forum. For my 2001, I have had a tune up at 30,000, 60,000 and 90,000. I usually do plugs, radiator coolant and transmission filter changed. I flushed the transmission at 60,000 also, but I tow a lot. My brakes are still going strong, but I have heard of the 3rd gen. front discs warping. It could be your front discs are warped and need replacing. I have done the fuel filter once. You are suppose to change the timing belt at 90,000. I have waited, since most members have not had a probelm and the engine is considered a non-interference engine. I plan on replacing the belt at 120,000 miles, which will happen early next year.

Oh yeah, I have had to replace the windshield wipers twice and I had a replace my antenna, O2 sensor, battery and drive shaft.

At this point, I'd do a transmission fluid change (I'd recommend against those power flushes), tune up (spark plugs, air filter, but don't change the plug wires if the truck is running well), and as far as the braking issue, definitely a warped rotor issue. Very easy to do. I did this on my old 4Runner and my Tacoma. First, get some rotors and pads. Autozone blank rotors have a 2 yr warranty against stuff like this. Also get pads, too. I'd suggest some good ceramic pads. I used Autozone's, but there are plenty of t
others around. If I didn't have to get the pads done that day, I'd probably have gone with Hawk LTS pads from tirerack. The pad/rotor change is pretty simple.

Make sure to properly bed in the new pads.

go to the back of the manual, look under the maintenance schedule, and go through that and try and figure out what has or hasn't been done, check it off the list and keep moving down the list, it should have everything from 5K to 200K as far as maintenance is concerned.

i think this way you'll get a very good idea of the over-all condition of your ride and know a lot more about it by the time your done, as well as knowing that your vehicle is as current as possible and gives you a good place to go from in future maintenance scheduling.

some of the stuff on the list in not crucial but i like to go by the engineering standards provided. i truly believe the guys who get 500K on their trucks are the guys who do that sort of thing, not saying you'll reach 500K but it has happened.

In regarding to Rotor, is it necessary to replace it or you could have it turned. This is my first time touching the brake. My 4runner has 100K and never replaced the pad. I'm thinking about changing the pads but wasn't sure about the rotor because i occasionally experience the vibration. By reading the 4x4wire link you attached, they said it cost only ~$10 to turn each rotor which seemed to be very affordable. I dont' know how much it'll cost to replace it.

Please advise!

I would turn the rotors and change the pads. Next time id buy new rotors but it wont hurt anything to turn the rotors the first time. I just put new pads and calipers on mine and left the stock 100,000 mile rotors on, they were fine.
