2002 4Runner Cargo Capacity?

Does anyone know what the cubic feet capacity the cargo area of the 2002 4R has with the back seats upright and going up to the top of the back seats? I'm trying to get a comparison of the CF capacity to my Avalon's trunk.

I want to say I just read its somewhere around 80cu ft...don't know for sure, but that number popped in my head.

Really shouldn't be too hard to estimate. The area is relatively square. Just WxDxH, minus a small area for the wheel wells, plus a small area for the triangular space along the back of the back seats.

EDIT: My bad, I assumed you already had a 4Runner. To the top of the back seats would be less than 80 cu/ft, I would think. That number sounds like the whole cargo area. It's basically 4ft W x 5ft D x 2ft H, so about 40 cu/ft to the top of the seats. Just a rough estimate, though.

ya I didn't notice he only wanted to go to the top of the seats...so cut my answer in half, go with 40cu ft.

Cool thanks. I have a 4Runner just don't have access to it now and I just started thinking about a new project I want to do in the cargo area.

I think even 40 is too much. It's about 4 feet wide, but only maybe 2 feet to the top of the seats (probably less), and only about 3.5 feet deep. That's about 28 cu ft.

So 44.6 when seats are up, and about half that from the bottom to top of back seats...22cu ft

Pretty amazing how folding the seats nearly doubles the cargo capacity. Even better when the seat bottoms are completely removed.

Thanks for the help. I did a internet search for cargo capacity and didn't find much to go by, I didn't even think about going to Edmunds.

I thinking about building a big cargo box that I can secure items in so I don't know if I need to build it with the seats down or up, if back of seats is 22 CF I might build it with the seats down and then leave about a foot between the box and front seats so I have a place to set bags or whatever.

I want to make it where I can break it down and remove it without too much effort, I'm still trying to think about how to do that but I may have a base with the center cutout to save on weight, 4 walls that can be removed and then a roof that slides on. The trick is securing it from the inside so it can't be opened easily.

Of course just a saw and your ready to go but I guess the idea is to make it not worth someones while when they have no idea whats in the box and your parked in a well lit public place.
