Wrong. Chrome bumpers were optional on Base AND SR5. I have seen multiple examples of both.

The black flares are a Base/SR5 option introduced in late 1995 when the 3rd Gen came out which came standard when you ordered the Highlander package on your SR5 starting for the 1999 model year. I would say that the majority of the black flares made came on non-Highlander models.

Well, looking at my '97 SR5's Monroney sticker once again, it lists under exterior standard equipment:

FR & RR chrome bumpers and grille.

That is interesting. I am pretty sure my SR5 has it as an option, though I will try to verify that tomorrow. I nearly bought a gray bumper SR5 a couple years ago as well. While I can't show you that truck(the seller sold it as I was about to buy it and it got shipped to Liberia), I can show you some examples.

Spotted that on Toyotareference. Thanks for clearing that up. We were both wrong since the original statement was that Base models have gray bumpers and SR5's have chrome. Looks like Base gray bumpers could be installed as an option on the SR5 via the Sport Package.

No, I wasn't wrong. I only stated that the chrome front and rear bumpers were standard equipment on the '97 SR5 models. Which they were.

Lets just say there were plenty of options/combinations if you wanted to wait 3 months (the wait time in Nov of 98) to order one from the factory. I couldn't wait so I picked mine from the lot. I should have got the 6 with the stick.
