2002 4Runner: Trailer light help: WTF is this under my car?? :)

Hello,
I'm in the process of installing a hitch for my car. When I look under the car, I found this plug (2 pics attached). Anyways, my question is, what is this for? is it for trailer light? if so, what type of converter do I have to buy to connect to this?

So far, I bought a Hopkin Plug in 43415 simple T connector wiring kit. But if I can use that connector on the bottom,then I much rather do that.

that is the hookup for trailer lights. you can go to the stealership and get the piece that plugs in or take it over to autozone and find the matching piece (you might actually have better luck at napa for the plug and play part)

Are you positive? I went to Autozone and NAPA today, and neither places have the converter for this port. It looks like I have to go with the Hopkin Plug T connector kit, which is 10X the work since I have to rewire everything.

Yes I am pretty certain you will save time and effort by buying the Hopkins plug and play unit which ties into both sides of your tail-light harness, the hardest part will be pulling your cargo area plastic. Was about $35 on amazon when I bought it. If you have an existing trailer converter (little black box stuffed in one corner or the other of the cargo area rear) trust me just get rid of it -you might be tempted to just tie into it but it will short out at some point and you will do this all again...

once you have that all ready to go I highly recommend the Hopkins LED trailer plug (maybe $12 or so) to tie into it-as it gives you instant ability to read what is working and what is not. It just hangs out my back end near the hitch-check my facebook link pretty sure I got some decent photos up on there.

Keep good notes as you go on wiring colors and so on and you can do it-my son and I did this about a year ago. I want to say the Hopkins unit is #43135 but check my old threads or search HOPKINS trailer converter and I am pretty sure you will find this here and on Yota Tech. edit yes it is completely possible your 02 is slightly different than my 99....

Check all your functions before you put the cargo area back together again, be sure you have not wired up your brake lights to the parking lites and so on...we did...learn from my mistakes previously....
