2002 4Runner transmission died, worth fixing?

So my 2002 4runner had a transmission failure, I was driving on the freeway when it was making a strange sound and then wouldn't accelerate anymore. I was able to glide to the shoulder and get it towed. It's got about 220k miles on it and everything else works great. I'm wondering if it's worth fixing?

I"m getting quotes of replacing the transmission (with a use one) for about $2500 out in Northern California. Doesn't look like it's worth much junking it.

Looking for some advice.

I replaced mine with a good used one for $650, and spent about 10 hours swapping it. You can buy a reman with torque converter for $1700, and that includes shipping.

I wouldn't pay $2500 for the work if it were me. If it's in good shape I would do the swap myself though.

Not sure where in california you are but, around la has piles of used toyo parts in junk yards. I would 100% replace. any new cars going to cost you alot more than a transmission

You can buy a new transmission from Toyota for less than 2000. I would just go that route.

For reference I put a toyota reman tranny in our 02. Had it done at a shop and the total with labor was like $3200. Yes I know expensive but I had to have it done in a hurry because we needed the vehicle for daily commute. And believe it or not, the thing actually died within a year. Toyota warranties it and a toyota dealer put in the replacement tranny. No problems since. My reasoning was that a new car would cost a lot more and now this one will probably run forever.
