2002 4WD not Working

I have a 2002 4Runner Sport Edition I just bought and everything works great.... Except for the 4wd system. It's in 4wd high and I push the 4wd button, and nothing happens. No clicking, no lights on the dash flashing... Nothing. It's like the button doesn't work. I checked to make sure it's plugged in, which it is.

I do have a code for "open center diff circuit" and the vsc lights on the dash are on. I've tried resetting them but they immediately come back on. I took it to a reputable 4wd shop and they weren't able to diagnose the issue. They said it could be the diff switch or the 4wd ecu.

Anybody have any insight or have experienced this issue before?

Have you checked underneath for any loose plugs/connections related to the 4wd system?

So if you scan the obd2 does it give a code or pending code?

Next have you got an FSM? It's gonna be really handy figuring this out.

Check your 4WD fuse. It may have been removed to hide the fact that there is a problem with the 4WD system. Take a look under the truck and make sure everything is plugged in on the transfer case, the front driveshaft is in place, and the front wiring to the ADD system (right under the motor on the back side of the front diff) is plugged in.

FSM = Factory Service Manual. Also sometimes called the Big Green Book (BGB).

So I'm very very ashamed to admit... It was a fuse. When I got the vehicle I checked ALL the fuses with a multimeter and every fuse was good. But I decided to double check it again today, specifically the 4wd fuse. Guess what?? There wasn't even a fuse in that location ***

Put in a 20amp fuse and it all started magically working

I wouldnt smile just yet. There had to be a reason that the fuse was pulled. They dont just fall out. Hopefully you will be ok .

How is the 4x4?? Any issues. I am having similar problems. 4 lo works. but when I try 4 hi the 4x4 light blinks. Any ideas?

Might be a long shot for that code but that is the code that the computer will throw when the Andymod has been completed. It's a mod that allows you to disable to traction and stability control on the later 3rd gens. Is there any extra switches on your dash? Most people use a factory fog light switch. Like I said a long shot but since you just bought it the P.O. could have done that but it shouldn't affect the functionality of the 4WD

I think that has to do with the sensor in the differential. A lot of people have luck cleaning them and getting it to work again.
