did all 4wd's come with E locker diffs or was that an option? one came in to a local yard and i was in a hurry and didn't check if it has one or not. it is clean from the doors back having been smashed in the front. it is thundercloud and clean. i got some parts already but again, didn't check for the E locker diff.

benefits of it? is it helpful or worth putting in to a 2wd?

It wasn't available in 01-02, Toyota replaced it with the multimode transfer case in all of them and added some electronics that can kinda simulate having a locker.

I'd swap a locker in, gives you another drive wheel which will help for some wheeling. I've found my 2WD to be quite capable in stock trim, but I'm not going to climb anything or go though serious mud unless I've got somebody with me to pull me out.

Wait. Does 2WD 4runners have LSD?

you are correct about the 01-02 years and locker.
But toyota did not replace the locker with the multimode per say.

my 00 limited has the multimode and locker it just doesn't have the traction control that the 01 and 02 have.

toyota had tons of different combinations of what was offered as far as drive train components. there is no cut and dry this and that is what came on what vehicles that ive seen.
