2002 Automatic Tranny grinding noise.

So my tranny developed a grinding noise in 3rd gear I think. It only happens driving around 60km/hr. I ran it on jack stands and its pretty obvious. I tried searching google but came up with no similar issues. I don't know how much time I have till it dies. Please I need some advice, I donno what to do best, rebuild, JDM or Local low miles?

I'm also considering doing a manual swap. They are like 4times cheaper. Does anybody know a writeup on doing this with 01-02? Are the T-cases interchangeable between the AT and MT? I'd like to keep my push button style knob and the Tcase. Not many 01-04 Tacos trannies around. Also would I need any computers from the donor?

They are cheaper & more fun too! And when you add bigger tires you wont have the tranny searching for gears. Just downshift & climb any hill you want.

I dont think the transfer cases are the same & you'll need to put in a manual shifter. The manuals dont have the multimode/AWD option. We only have RWD, 4 Hi & 4 Low. The last year for a manual was 2000 so search for a 96-2000 MT & transfercase. There is no computer control on a manual tranny, that's how I am able to put a TRD SC on my truck.

I'm sure other people who know more than me will chime in.

Thats why I was referring to 01-04 Tacos, I believe they have multi mode t-case with manual tranny, I could be mistaken though.

What would I need for the swap except the tranny itself and tcase? I'm also concerned about what would happen with VSC/TRAC and ABS... I have the electronic braking system on mine, it pisses me off to tell you the truth. Never in the 2 years I've owned my T4R it came in handy, maybe even the opposite. I probably need to get a whole donor truck to work with.
I found a 96 manual for $2000, has broken rear diff but all else works, has 300k kms on it though. Also has front and rear bumpers and winch that I could use, pretty good condition from what it seems.

I don't know about the Tacos, I'm sure a google search will tell you everything you need to know. You'll have to disable the VSC/TRAC, that stuff is BS anyway. I have it in my Accord Coupe, I love the car but I hate it when it comes on (usually in snow which freakes me out) I know how to freakin' drive! LOL
I know you'll need a different length driveshaft & it sounds like the donor would be the correct length. If your serious I would buy the donor before it gets away & you should be able to get it cheaper than 2Gs'.

I did a good bit of research before I did the 5speed swap on my 97 and I did not come across anyone who did it on a 01-02 4runner. Later year tacomas 2001-2004 have been done. Interesting thinking about using a tacoma, the biggest hurdle is being able to use the ecu from the donor otherwise you always have a check engine light. There is no ecu for a manual 2001-2 so the transmission swap can be done but not the ecu. Using a tacoma ecu to run your 4runner would be interesting, it could work but.. Your easiest option is do the manual swap and deal with having your cel on all the time if you can legally do it where you are

The problem is I cant find a manual tranny from 01-04 Taco. I found a 99 Taco tranny though. I wonder if I used the ECU from the 99 will it trigger the CEL. Or use a the tranny from 99 and find a ECU from 01-04?

When you did your swap did you keep your tcase or used one from the donor? My mechanic assures me that they're interchangeable. I'd like to keep my multi mode with push button shifter. I love the idea of locking centre diff. Also I wonder if the 5 speed has a 4wd computer and if I need to swap that too. I dont really care if I keep the vsc trac though.

Nuts and bolts wise the transmission from a 99 will bolt on as long as it is the same engine( 4cyl is a W59 and 6cyl is a R150) The problem is getting everything to work together. If you use a taco trans you are still going to need a bunch of parts to make it work The brake pedal clutch pedal master and slave should all work from the taco, front driveshaft should work too. Your transfer case will bolt on and if you leave the wiring as is that should work too. The ecu is a problem I have not seen anyone resolve yet for a 01-02. Its better to have a donor vehicle to get all the parts you will need for the swap. As for figuring out how not to get a cel, I would get the wiring diagram for your vehicle and for whatever you choose for the donor for the swap and go through it wire by wire.

I guess I'll throw the tranny in next week and go from there. There are a few manual 4runners in local salvage yards so I think I'll be ok with getting what I need. I've read somewhere that resistors can be used to fool the ECU into thinking theres still an auto tranny present. I guess The CEL issue is the last thing I'll worry about.

If you have local salvage runners you can pick up a lot of small parts you will need like the exhaust bracket and trans mount which are different from the auto. There are some good write-ups on the tacoma forums for the wiring you need to do to make the auto ecu work Good luck

Did you get this to work? I have an 02 with a tranny that is going that I would love to put a 5speed in with no CELs. I'm not sure about the transfer case though. I may opt for the j type just because my current transfer case has left me in a pickle when it would not shift into 4wd when very cold and snowy out.

Can you tell me how you re pinned the ECU?
