I have a 2002 Limited 2WD with just under 73,000 miles on it. I started my 4runner and it sounded normal but once I put it in drive, it died. The car starts without issue but once put it in reverse or drive, it just dies. My dad was finally able to get the car going by changing to the lowest gear possible and accelerating fast. Once the car gets going, you can switch gears to drive and it will run. However, once you slow down to a stop, it dies and you have to start the process from low to drive all over again.
Originally there were no warning lights that came on. Once we got on the road at highway speed, the TRAC OFF light as well as the VSC light came on. My dad checked to see if there was anything loose under the car and didn't see anything. He also checked all of the fluids and everything seems fine. I have not had any problems with the car before and the only thing that was out of ordinary for it was I drove it down a semi-muddy country road. I have done this before and never had any problems before but I normally drive in the city.
I would appreciate any suggestions on the place where I should take the 4Runner to get checked out and/or the area where I might direct a mechanic to take a look. Am I correct in thinking that this might be a transmission problem and if so, should I start by taking it to a transmission shop? Thank you in advance for any help.
