2002 Roof Rack

I have just purchased a used 2002 4Runner SR5 with the factory roof rack. My questions is how do you remove the cross members? I see how they are loosened so they can be moved back and forth but I don't see how the cross members can be removed from the rails completely?

i just took mine off to repaint them
the crossmembers are slightly tricky i know..
you have to unscrew the long wise racks and the small kinda triangular piece at the front of those will come off, dont force it or the little tab will break then its time for superglue.

summary: unscrew absolutely everything up there and dont lose any screws and the crossmembers will come off

The bigger challange is getting them back on. There are more parts to the cross bars than you would think there would be. I bought replacement bolts for the bars and there are actually a couple of parts that the bolts screw into that you would never know are there - until you remove them.
