2002 SR5 Question

Hey guys,

My son has as found a 2002 Toyota 4Runner SR5. Has 198k miles on it, supposedly runs well. Minor problems with drivers window motor, but it's in the up position and the AC works. Seller is asking 1800 OBO. What are some specific things, mechanical or other, to look out for if we go and take a look at the truck?

I found a 2002 SR5 in 2013 with 180k miles for $5500... it needed nothing at the time...but soon had to change the water pump / timing belt, lower ball joints, and at 240k my transmission went out.

Other than that it runs like top.

Get underneath it and make sure there's not a lot of rust / leaks.
Run a carfax....seems like a salvage title price

Has not been advertised as a salvage, owner says it runs fine. I will ask when the timing belt has been changed, thank you for suggesting that!

Just went though this myself searching for my 02 Sport. As already suggested, timing belt and vehicle history are really important. Make sure timing belt has been done in last 90k. When I was looking for mine, I came across 3 cars that I drove and liked with decently low mileage (150k-180k). Was ready to buy cash in hand, but ran a carfax just to be sure. Turned out odometer had been rolled and all of them had over 250k.
Other than that, check suspension if loose (mine is original with 187k...), weird noises, usual used car things.

It appears to be in very good shape, just needs brakes!

What would you all recommend for the very first items he look into performing maintenance wise after the oil change and break job.

Coolant?
Transmission fluid?
Differential fluid?

Start here.

I would change the oil, check/change all fluids, swap in a new radiator, replace LBJs, and check suspension/steering components.
