2002 T4R w/ 130K- Should I buy a service contract?

Just bought my first T4R, a 2002 4WD Limited with 130K miles. Bought it from a dealer for $9993. I had the car inspected by a private company and they said it was in great shape with normal wear and tear for that age/mileage and that engine/drivetrain/chassis all looked good. When signing the final paperwork, the finance manager convinced me to buy a 2yr/24,000 mile service contract for $1700. It is the Western General Mileage Plus plan. Decided to go with it since they had a 30 day cancellation policy.

Are these service contracts a good idea for used T4Rs? I've heard a lot of complaints about 3rd party warranty companies not covering claims. Has anybody dealt with this company? Unsure if I should just put the $1700 in a savings account or keep the warranty.

They are not exactly a reputable outfit, like most or all 3rd party extended waranty scam companies. Go back and get your money back and save it for car repairs down the road. Google them for more details if you want.

By getting an independent 3rd party to inspect the vehicle you did the best thing you could do. Given their good report and the 4R reputation suggests major problems in the next 2 years/24K are unlikely.

As was suggested - get your money back and put the $1700 somewhere for safekeeping in case you need it - that's a nice start on a maintenance fund.

Agree. I'd NEVER do a S/C with anyone but Toyota. I too had a bad experience with a 3rd party - they'll fight you tooth-and-nail to keep from paying a claim.

Get your money back asap.
