2003 4-runner alloy wheels issue

Hi, have about 125k miles on a 2003 4-runner limited. Several months ago I noticed each wheel shows the finish bubbling and certainly peeling. Vehicle is mostly used for normal driving and out in the elements but in lower mid-atlantic where weather is not particularly harsh. Is this normal wear and tear? Anyone experiencing the same issue? Thanks

Yep, I had the exact same issue with the spare tire rim the worst of the lot but all were starting to look bad.

So I found a local place that media blasted the old finish off & had the rims powder coated flat black for $300 for all 5. The have since held up fine in the 2 years I have had em like this & that includes lots of wheeling too.

Good luck, hope that helps.

I just bought a used 2004. The same thing is happening. I plan on sanding down eventually and spraying with some black rattle can bedliner.

I have the same issue on my '03. Stock rims are pealing and rusting. Not sure what to do. May try to find someone to sandblast and repaint or may just wait till the tires need to be replaced and then replace the rims as well. Would like to hear how the bed liner solution works out.

Been there! My 03 stock rims were oxidizing and peeling when I bought my T4R used in 2007. I decided to buy another set of rims (from a fellow T4R.org member) that were in way better condition. Once I got them, I cleaned them really well and applied a coat of wax. They've made it through our Canadian winters with all of its road salt no problem.

I had also considered, as already suggested, sandblasting and powdercoating the original rims. I just didn't want to have my T4R tied up with the wheels off.

Both of these options are less expensive than new rims through Toyota.
