2003 4Runner fog lights question?

HI all,

Since I never had fog lights before and my 2003 4Runner SR5 came with factory fog lights, I'm not sure if I need to adjust them properly:

- The fog light beams illuminate only about 2 or 3 feet in front of the vehicle. I believe that fog lights are supposed to go farther than that to cut thru the fog in a low position? Should I adjust them to illuminate at least as far as the low beam? Or at least more than 3 feet? Having fog lights that project only 3 feet from the front is useless anyway?

Acutally, foglights are not for distance. The main function is to provide WIDE angle illumination. To be at it's best, foglight needs to be as low to the ground as possible to cut UNDER the fog. Therefore, foglights work best on sports cars, but are useless on SUVs/trucks.

So, basically, your 4Runner's foglights are not likely gonna give you much help in fog. I usually just turn mine off...turn it on just for fun at times.

Yes, fogs illuminate the sides of the road. I have found them to be sometimes useful in light snowstorms where you can't use your highs, but want/need some more light. Eventually someone like PIAA will probably make driving lights that will fit the new 4Runner. I installed some pencil beam Hella driving lights on a Passat and they were fantastic for illuminating WAY down the road for deer. They were mostly useless in the hilly/mountainess area where I live. If you are a flatlander, look into them.

It suggests that the fog lights aim straight ahead though.
