2003 4runner transmission v8 2wd

okay so from doing numerous searches I have come to the conclusion that I have the 5 speed transmission in my 03 4runner v8 2wd.

I recently did a drain and fill on my transmission and used toyota atf type IV.

It said to use type IV on the tranny dipstick.

After doing some reading (on this forum) I read that the 03 v8 had the 5speed and ws fluid is used???

I feel like I used the right fluid considering that is what was on the dipstick...

However some clarification would help...

The 4th gen rule is: If it has a dipstick TYPE IV, if it's the "sealed" type then WS. You're fine...

thanks for the confirmation cj3flyr! It was beginning to drive me a little crazy...

Also, for anyone doing a drain and fill on a 03 v8 2wd 4runner, the refill volume is 3.2qts. I initially put 4.5 qts back into my 4runner because I had read 4-5 qts will come out on a thread someone had done on.

I checked the level and it was way high. So I completely drained it and refilled it with 3.2 qts (after refering to my owners manual) and it was near perfect.

After further investigation the drain and fill thread I was reading was done on a 4 speed transmission that hold 5 qts in the transmission pan. Its my understanding that this 4 speed came on 2003 v6's.

Im sure all this is common knowledge, but Im a newbie!!! and loving my new used 4runner!

Forgot to ask Ive been checking the transmission fluid with the car running and in neutral is this correct?

These were the instructions to check the tranny fluid for our old tahoe. Ima assuming this is the universal way to check tranny fluid for those with a dipstick.

Yes. In fact the transmission should be at normal temp. That takes more than letting it idle in the driveway. It should be checked after a 5-10mil normal drive. (Just because the engine is warm doesn't mean the transmission is warm.)

The other thing is it should be cycled through the gears: If you come home from work, go in change and grab a beer then want to check the fluid you should start it, cycle through R & D long enough to feel the engagement. The trans is still warm because only 10-15minutes went by in my little story

Same question here...
every 30K mi?
After the Timing Belt done at 94K, while the service manager was viewing my vehicles service record, I highlighted major maintenance and that the transmission was last serviced at 62K..
WHY? didn't he recommend it done again when its 94K then..instead recommended the rear diff..I even asked further then he said "youre good, you just have the T-belt and water pump done, you can go far"
