2003 Rear Hatch Electronic Failure

My rear hatch (electronic) will not open, defroster and wiper blade will not work. Checked fuses and replaced the rear ECU (purchased part from Toyota)... still not working.

Any ideas of what might be wrong or what I should try next? Anyone experienced this?

Never been in an accident, no damage to the hatch. Simply stopped working! :(

Forgive me if this is dumb, but did you try resetting the vehicle ECU by unplugging the battery for 15-20 minutes?

I had those same problems once after messing with the hatch and solved it by unplugging negative terminal on the battery for about 30 minutes.

I did originally try that... however, it wouldn't hurt to try again.

I used a meter and there is electricity running out of the ECU... don't know where it malfunctions.

Oh I see... I don't have any other ideas then. I just know mine did the exact same thing two or three times and the first two times it somehow started back on its own.

The third time I posted a thread here and got it working after resetting the ECU. I left it unplugged for a good 30-45 minutes but that was only because I forgot about it when some people came over. I think 5-10 should be just as good.

just disconnected it again... will let you know how it goes...

called dealer re: programming new ECU (wasn't sure if I had to? but, dealer said no need to)

update -- fixed!

my bf took the vehicle to his buddy's shop where they were able to put 2 4runners side by side to test the malfunction... noticed a little blue wire was blown.

a little electric tape and voila, fixed! my trunk works again! :)

what a relief. the toyota dealership wanted to charge me $5100 for the repair. rip off!

thank you for all of your help & suggestions!!

Seriously - no kidding. Where was the little blue wire located?
