2003 Supercharged V8 Installed

I finally received my supercharger from Toyota of Dallas today. I have a appointment with Toyota of Garden Grove to install it next week and I'm so excited I hugged my UPS driver and got something in my eye...

Anyway I'm thankful for boards like this which provide such a wealth of info.

I just ran into a snag. Under close inspection of the SC housing peering through the intake body it looks as though it was cracked and resealed during the manufacturing process. I'm going to have TRD here in Costa Mesa look at it and do a pressure check if possible to make sure it really has been sealed and is ok. Anyway I will keep ya'll updated.

Did toyota ever Sell a super charged 4runner? I can rember seeing one at a dealer with a TRD supercharged sicker on the back and on the sides. It had a used price of around 48k. But I wasn't awear they made them, did they? And when are they gonna make a charger for our little 4.0's?

If it was a used on 48K is high and a rip off. Consider that I bought my 2003 Limited 2x4 for 34,000 loaded, the 4x4 was about 36-34K. The SC installed would be another $4500 installed.

A Supercharged 4Runner is just a regular 4Runner with the TRD SC installed and it is as simple as that. Anyone who thinks they are getting something special when the dealer is selling a SC'ed 4Runner and buying it for a premium is misinformed and needs to do their research.

Supercharger is a GO!

Dealer is installing today and finishing tomorrow. Hopefully I'll have pics and a little vid clips on putfile Thursday or Friday. Magnuson said the crack was a minor casting flaw and should not pose a problem. Toyota of Dallas said if they said it was ok then go for it. If I have a problem Toyota of Dallas said with what Magnuson said it won't be a problem covering it if something goes wrong.

My plans are to leave it stock with the SC and see how it fairs. Once that is squared and warranty eventually goes out I'll tune both injectors and see if JP Performance can go ahead and redesign the Y-Pipe and/or the entire system excluding the header since it is so cost prohibitve right now. Anyway I'll dyno it along the process.

I bought my '05 Sport from Toyota of Garden Grove last August. They're great over there. No matter what comes up with my 4Runner, they've always worked to keep me happy. I bought a '97, an '02 Limited, my '05 Sport 4Runners and my '05 Matrix from them. They're just great over there. Do you know if that SC will fit my '05 Sport? I'm going to call Pat and Tim down there and ask them about it.

I'm not too well educated in the design of the '05 engines. Do you have the V8 vvt-i with something like 270-280 hp? Also is the engine a 2UZFE? As I get more info on what works I can let people know.

I do know that at least for the 2UZFE engines all the current gen SC Main Assemblies are the same. The only difference is the TRD ECU Piggyback. This being the case it you can get your hands on a Main Assembly, you can always go third party for the engine management where it would essentially take over the sensor and engine control and A/F ratio. This would lead way to more control on your part of your engine's performance, however in CA you would have problems passing smog unless you have found one of the shops who are tuner friendly. The other option is to buy it with whatever TRD ECU Piggyback it has and hand over the two injectors to be controlled by an add-on like URD AIC1, or 2 if it exist for that matter.

Anyway if you are relatively close to Orange we could always check out each other's engines and see what the difference is.

YES! I'd like to compare motors. My V8 is rated at 270hp. I live on Ontario, but I work in Aliso, so I'm down there everyday. Let me know when you get your4Runner back and we can set something up. I would like to have a look at the SC work they did.

No Problem. The truck is ready. I will be picking it up tonight. It took them awhile since the first tech hurt his back lifting the SC out of the back. Anyway they said after the test drive the tech just had a huge grin on his face.

I looked into that 4runner in Maine last year. At that point, it was down to 34k. If it was dark blue-then that was the same one. It had trd rims, exhaust, dvd, etc. It was the regional service managers demo!

Anyway, I have a question about the sc. I had mine at the dealer today, and they noticed that on the driver side of the supercharger, around where the 3rd intake runner from the front goes down, there seems to be a plate or some kind of cover missing. Its held in by 6 small bolts, and seems to go into the sc unit itself. Its causing a rough idle, and a check engine light to go on with a vacuum leak code. They called trd, who flat out refused to talk about the unit and would not help to identify the piece -whether it was missing etc!

Those of you that have an SC on their 4runners, can you try to find the spot where I'm describing, and look to see if there is a piece that I seem to be missing somehow?

I assume your talking about the V8. Here is a picture of the SC uninstalled on the driver's side. I'll take another of it installed on the car tonight.

See the spot between the 3rd and 4th intake runner thats shiny and you can see 2 bolt holes? thats the spot!- what the heck goes there? Theres nothing in the directions about it at all. Can you see if all 6 holes go into the unit itself?

He told me that they were just finishing up testing your SC and that it was all installed and that it looked and sounded good. I'm going to look into putting one into my 4Runner. The service guy told me that they could put one into my 4Runner, no problem. I still want to see and hear one first.

I looked at my installation. My holes are exposed too! However it can't be the root of your problems since mine is running like a champ. Walk yourself through the installation manual and find the leak in the hoses or even the SC main assembly itself.

Dudes and Dudettes Here's the update!

Update March 11th, 2006.

After I picked the truck up from the dealer I romped on it and got some pinging. I took it down to the VP Station in Orange for about 10 gallons of 100 octane for $6.67/gal. . The pinging went away after another 5-10 miles of moderate driving. After that I had to force myself out of the car and go home after driving around for 2 hours. Some Pics and a video accelerating on the on ramp. It was an incline starting at about 25mph going to almost 100mph with only about 70% throttle. Keep in mind the 4Runner weighs about 4400-4500 lbs. The SC is very quite as you will be able to tell, it sounds like the power steering on older cars when you were turning them hard at low idle. Everything else on the engine is stock except a drop in K&N Filter. At idle she purrs. I couldn't imagine how she would sound with an intake and exhaust!

The truck accelerates like my rolla, only smoother since it is an auto. Tap on the gas at a stop light and 60 mph hits in a couple blinks of the eye. Freeway passing is effortless with shifting of the auto so smooth. Although I haven't fully floored the truck, I know I will have a hard time keeping up with it 0-60 and would only catch and maybe slightly beat it in the quarter, all that pending if I have perfect shifting.

Oh one other thing. The $$$$.$$ was totally worth it even if you plan on just leaving everything else in the engine stock.

The SC itself was $3890 (no tax since it was out-of-state and shipping was free), the install with some additional parts like tape and an o-ring and coolant was about $814.00. Expensive for my taste but out of 10 dealerships in SoCal I called to have it installed they had them beat by at least $100.00.

Check it out. There is a 2003 4Runner SC on sale right now on eBay for about $130.00 less then I bought mine for with shipping in the U.S.

Relatively cheap when your talking superchargers for a V8.

get the colder plugs for it, should take care of most of the pinging. I still get it around 2000 RPM, I dont think TRD put enough fuel in it at that RPM so it can pas smog. I am going to put my wideband O2 on it one of thies days.

Let me know if you have any questions, I have been doing alot of little modifications to mine and have a good I dea on how to get this thing to realy scate.

You will notice that shifting sucks when you floor it. It is a good idea to let off the throttle a little bit when shifting ocurs to speed the process.

Did you TRD ecu have a little round sticker on it? orange or green? With your year and model on it?
